I just finished watching the movie from 1987. I know it's based off of a book, but I was wondering if anyone here has read it? It doesn't explain in the movie, but why do the grandparents hate the kids so much as to want to kill them?

The movie is on Netflix, and it's worth a watch. Very creepy shit.

I think the kids were the product of incest if I remember the book , it's been a while since I read it

No, not incest kids. They committed 'incest' together but they were hidden so that the mother would regain her parents love and this her inheritance without her father finding out she ever had kids.

Oh wait, turns out they were incest kids. Half uncle half niece or something.

I read the book when I was in grade four. My poor brain.

did the grandma know that the mom was poisoning the kids and that instead of taking the boy to the hospital, they buried him or was that her idea?

Grandma knew about the poisoning, after a while she even half-heartedly tried to warn the kids about it. They never said whos idea was behind the burial but it was assumed ut was the moms plan

I read the book in the 80s and it was way better than the movie. The whole story and series totally falls apart though....you have a big young guy and he is going to stay stuck in some crappy room and not man up and get them all out of there? Give me a break. Wow, grandma and mom, real scary! : )

Yeah the mom ran off with a relative of theirs when she was young I suppose and had the kids after marrying him. So the parents disowned both of them and all of that. The grandmother disapproved but eventually agreed to let the mother and children come to live at their house after the husband died.

The purpose was for the mother to regain the love of her father, the kids' grandfather.

To do this she realized she must erase all trace of her incestuous relationship and began poisoning the children. You can also kinda see vestiges of an incestuous relationship forming between the older two children and I believe this is also explored more in the book but I don't remember either.

Just finished watching the 2014 movie, which is much truer to the book than the 1987 film version. Creepy fucking movie. I am now watching Petals on the Wind, which is the sequel.

Haven't read the series, but were the kids programmed to feel helpless, kind of like a circus elephant with chain around his leg all of it's life programmed to think that it can't break through a rope around his leg in later years?

This reminds me of that show "The Killing". Great show but the main cop who is a women had the driest lips I've ever seen on TV. It was clearly done on purpose but I don't understand why it just looked gross.
