I just got a job doing some flat roofing and I have a interview tomorrow at 7am. I have done some sloped roofing before but i have never done flat roofing. I was just wondering if anyone has done flat roofing and is it harder to do then sloped roofs?

-Thanks

Pretty sure that flat roofing = metal work as you couldn't use shingles on a flat roof.

Flat roofing is almost all done with a torch and is in general a lot easier than working on a sloped roof.

I use to load roof tile back in my earl 20's. It was the craziest job with the craziest people I have ever had/met. Crazy pitched roofs, high buildings and drug addicts. It was nuts, but I was as strong as an Ox.

Yeah i thought sloped roofing was pretty hard especially when taking off old shingles in the middle of the winter. Plus if your not used to it your lower back will be killing you when your working on a sloped roof.

It's easier to fall off a sloped roof

Fuck you guys, I'm no roofing expert.

These are two completely different systems. Flat roof is a sheet rubber coating, usually torched into place. Sometimes it's one piece seamless if you're willing to pay for laser measuring. A Flat roof is water tight as water will pool.
A sloped roof is done with many other materials, Clay, slate, asphalt, metal. yada yada. These aren't water tight. It's just easier for the water to flow off the roof than it is to go back under the shingles.. Unless there's ice damming.

If you've never done flat roofing TS then prepare to pack around roll after roll of what is known as "Torch On". Its basically a big roll of granulated tar that weighs about 40 or 50 lbs.

Yeah that's not really a big deal. When i was doing sloped roofing i was carrying up 80 pound shingles up a 2 story home. Didn't get to install the shingles but my job was pretty much ripping and prepping the roof while the shingler's came behind me and did the shingles. Also with this company we had 0 fall protection so when you rip off the old shingles all those little granules made the roof not safe at all until we swept the granules off.

Did hot tar roofing one summer as a kid.. ....nasty, hot as shit work.

If you're good with taxes, ask your boss if he trusts his wife.

So basically, what was your job duties day to day?

I was 17 or 18 so I was basically the gopher. The head guy was the "mop guy " , everyone else either layed the material that the tar got mopped onto or kept the machine that melted the tar and pumped it up to the roof going. There were 5 or 6 or is on the crew I think . Shit. .....it's been forever since I thought about that job.

So i went for the interview and got asked like 2 questions and then had to sign a 100 page document. The document talks about if i quit or get fired in the first 2 weeks they would only need to pay me $10 a hour. Keep in mind this job was hiring at $25 a hour. Then it says if you damage any property even if it's a accident or damage tools it will come out of your paycheck. It had a bunch of other dumb bullshit in it and after reading most of it i just walked out and left. Keep in mind this company after doing some research had a 15,000 fine on them in 2012 for there materials crashing through the roof and into a old folks home, in the cafeteria.

lol fuck them. Join an apprenticeship program at a local union hall.

There is 3 main types of flat roofing style. Torch down, mop down, and self adhesive. Hot, hard work bruh. It will either make a man of you or break you. Have fun!

Well, i have done a bunch of HARD ass jobs including the oil rigs. I have done roofing before on sloped roofs but not flat roofs. I also have done framing and concrete work. I would still be working in the oil rigs in Alberta if i didn't get laid off. I miss those 14 grand a month paychecks let me tell you.
