A fight which will always be remembered as the birth of one of the biggest names in MMA history, GSP.

Georges looked like a complete fighter in this fight. He was one of the first guys in the sport to really be solid in all facets. This was a true example of the sport evolving, and the whole grappler vs striker thing being kind of put to bed.

In the infant years of MMA, the typical thing for a fighter was for them to have one very solid discipline. Matt Hughes dominated the Welterweight division for years based off of everyone's lack of wrestling defense. His primary weapon, was something that most people could not contest with.

I feel that this fight showed and depicted the new norm for MMA at the time, that you cannot be good at one thing. One of the main reasons why Georges went on to dominate for years, he was simply too good at everything.

The fight:

Firstly, I want to state that I'm not being harsh here, but rather 100% honest.

Matt Hughes' striking was non-existent, it's been a while since I had such a lack of faith in a skillset. He seemed like he had never once learned how to defend a leg-kick and that was really the main component of him losing here.

GSP out-struck him handily in the first round, and even scored the only takedown of this fight. He rocked him and dropped him very badly with a Superman-Punch at the end of the first - it looked over from there.

Georges' gameplan was clearly to work Hughes' legs and then when he's hurting from them, come up high. It ended up winning him the fight, as he caught Matt with a beautiful head-kick and finished him with some brutal ground and pound.

I did not like the fact that Georges kicked him low 3 times in the first round, I don't think it was deliberate but it was extremely careless. If this was Jon Jones, we would all cry about it. At the end of the day, I think he always would have won, even minus the low-blows.

I've never liked Georges, but I definitely liked him a whole lot more back here. I was genuinely happy for him looking back, when he collapsed to the mat and started crying - it felt very genuine.

Great job by Georges, showed he was here to stay, and was only 25.

What do you guys remember from this fight? Reactions, predictions, thought?

I kind of thought this was going to be a breakdown of his guard passing.

Passing of the guard. Or changing of the guard ?

He wasn't perfect but GSP was pretty fuckin good. I have my thoughts on him. You guys can have yours. I'm not into this GOAT bullshit. It's impossible to prove. And even stupider to try.

You liked him or hated him. But to deny what he did is just really pathetic.

I thought he was a much better fighter than Hughes. The difference in skill was quite evident.

Hughes was never on GSP's level.

He actually passed the guard of Hughes pretty well lol, landed some stiff ground and pound.

Not like that pillow-fisted stuff in the last 5 years ;)

Only playing.

He was in revenge mode. Didn't fight like this against anyone else but another man whom he once lost to - Matt Serra.

I thought Hughes was gonna take it again, he was coming off that awesome win over BJ and GSP had struggled to get past BJ.

Hughes simply had better wrestling when they first fought, Georges' wrestling defense evolved and he stuffed Matt's 2 attempts in this fight. If he'd have got taken down, who knows how this would have went.

Georges was 100% better than Hughes on the feet.

Nicely put.
This was arguably the best performance in a title fight.
No WW could ever beat GSP on this night. It's called passing of the torch btw.

when hughes couldnt complete the takedown, he had a look on his face like "oh! wonderful! i die now!"

All I remember is GSP kicking Hughes in the nuts 3 times and then kicking him in the head. Pretty fucking lame to be honest.

Not a GSP fan then? Neither am I by the way lol.
Not at all. I won't deny he's one of the greatest ever though. But to kick a guy low 3 fucking times and then basically win by head kick when the guys obviously expecting a 4th nut shot is just bullshit.

I think 3 low blows should be -1 point, how many times does it need to happen before it's deemed "deliberate".

I've never once seen a point taken in MMA for it.

Yeah its too bad they didn't have a 3rd fight to prove to haters that GSP was really far superior to Hughes. Oh wait GSPHughes.jpg
