Hey everyone, I am starting gi- BJJ classes this summer back home in St. Louis. I would have dont it where I am now, but I dont want to leave my teacher, who is very good with no-gi.

I am about 6 feet tall, about 225 and pretty muscular. I am very lower body heady (big legs and butt(no romo)). When I go shopping I usually have to buy pants a few sizes bigger because though my waist is about a 36, my quads and butt wont ft anything but a 38-40.

In looking for a gi, would you all have any particular suggestions for a first time gi, or sie which would fit best for someone with my body type?

If not, does it really matter what brand of Gi I get? I am looking into the Atama or Bad Boy gis.

Oh yeah, last question, Is it a douche move to get a blue gi for my first time? What do colors signify, I only ask cause I have always played on blue based sports teams, so I just like competing in blue.

Thanks for your help!

A Blue gi is ok for BJJ but I looked up the prices for both brands and That is too much for your first Gi.
Fuji Gi is a better gi for your first time and I personally wear their Gi . Even for fun they sell a Camo gi that is about the same price as the Atama Gi.

They have many choices and a chart to pick the best one. A would go with a size A4 if your not so "chesty" but A5 if your a huge beast of a man

In most schools blue is fine. Even in a more traditional Judo school blue is acceptable. I agree with Sensipatrick. Get a Fuji. I would go A5. I am an A3 in Fuji at 5'8 and 155 pounds. They shrink a lot.

How much should I spend do you think? I found some Atamas for like 120, and it said they usually go for 150. But the Fuji's definitely look good. I just wish I could try one on for size before ordering one.

Get a HEMP gi from Datsusara. An A4 will fit you perfect.

DATSUSARA MMA - Hemp Gear, Sportswear and Apparel They are stronger than traditional Gi's and breath like a T-shirt. Plus much less chance of catching ringworm when wearing them as HEMP is anti microbial.

btw im a big guy too. If you insist on a traditional cotton gi definately look at GROUND CONTROL FIGHT GEAR — High Quality Pre-Shrunk Kimonos. I have one of their A5's and it's great (6'2, 275, very muscular). Some great deals there too.

There is no such thing as too much for your first gi in my opinion. Find a gi that you like, look up reviews for it and make your decision that way. I bought my white gi from my school and 2 weeks later found a blue one online for 30 dollars cheaper so I bought it. Ask your instructor about colors.

I reviewed the gameness air gi which is in gear reviews and also in my blog in my sig. It is a really good gi for training. Nice and light even in an A4. My suggestion is, go to class with out a gi and ask people to try their jackets on. The worst that they can say is no. But you sound like an A4 either way.

The cut on Padilla & Sons is ideal for muscular guys.

thanks cinturao, this has easily moved up to my number 1 option after checking reviews...just debating blue or white lol

^^^^^^
I have both blue and white gold weaves. I believe they were $100 each when I bought them few years ago. :D

I am 5'9 225 and have the same problem i gotta wear a size 38 because of my legs any gi that says there a3 is 5'9 to 6'1 and in the 190 to 210 range should fit you perfect .

the gi's so far that i have had that fit me perfect are fuji's , atama , and storm kimonos the pants a little long on me but you being 6 feet they should fit you perfect .

I would start with a fuji light weight if your just starting gi they are really cheap .

Padilla Gi's were $90 just last month. Now it looks like they are $115

I just posted a shoyoroll a2-h that would fit you on ebay but your looking for cheap .

I love Atama. It was my second Gi and I got a white mundial #9. I think they are built for stalky peeps. I am 5'8 and 155. My first Gi was a blue Gi from Sirius (cheap). The sirius is now 10 shades lighter because it was my only gi for 2 years (college student budget).

Moral of the story...Get an Atama.

Atama ultralight is great for muscular build summer time training. Padilla and Sons are great for your build too but make sure to get the lightweight... you will sweat your balls off in the gold weave.

Where you training in St. Louis?

I was going to train with Rodrigo Vaghi, which is super far (i live downtown), so one of his black belts opened up a school in the city, so I will likely go there. Brian Guidry is the guys name.

Well I would suggest either a Atama gi or a Fuji gi. Atama because most of the guys I train with that are tall 5'11" and bigger like the way the gi fits. Atama has a pretty good quality and it's been in the Market for a very long time. The Fuji gi would fit your description for sure. For my experience the will fit you just fine. They have larger pants then the other brands I know and the top will be fine for your muscular body type.

About the color they don't mean much besides the white one. The white gi means the pure spirit of the practitioner. Colored gis were introduced to the market just to improve it and by judo competitions where the competitors wear different colors so it's easier to follow the points and distinguish who is who.
