Today i went to train for first time there and after grappling against for a bit, my neck started to hurt. we kept on rotating and i had to grapple some others so my stamina was really pushed and i found out it it lacks. but thats another issue.

So has anyone experienced this? basically, i cannot move my neck much. I cannot put any pressure on it (getting up, moving it left, right, back, forward, when i get up from bed its a nightmare). Does anyone know what the problem is and how long it will take to heal? I want to go back to training asap. But if i stay like this then i doubt i can. It totally immobalized me.

I have had a similar injury before (not sure though) when i did judo. It was when i came back after a little break and did not stretch enough. That took awhile to heal. i hope its not the same. if anyone knows what kinda pains i am talking about and knows of a way to speed up the recovery, please let me know.

This is what happened when we were training. last 30 minutes he lined 10 people up and gave them a specific situation. then 10 others would go and roll trying to complete their own task. The losers kept rotating. I believe that i was injured after the first guy. Our specific situation was that he put me in a closed guard and his task was to submit me or sweep me. My task was to get out of closed guard and move to side/mount or submit him. My neck was not really pressured as much here but me trying to protect myself from submissions constantly making sure i have both hands inside his guard and controlling my neck for a long period of time might have been the reason. But like i said i am not sure. it started to hurt from then. he never really went for a choke. He was trying to go for triangle but i kept making sure both hands were inside his guard and eventually he submitted me with an armbar.

Edited grammar a bit.. sorry my grammar isnt great.

First off, grammar is your friend. You will get more replies if you don't type like a 12 year old on a sugar high. It takes no more effort to use good grammar than not to, if you are keyboard savvy.

That sucks, but we need more information.

How did you hurt your neck? What position where you in? Was it a can opener, crucifix, some other neck crank? Were you being stacked in guard?

It does sounds bad though from the limited information you gave. Occasionally I'll get a 'stinger', but my neck has never really hurt to the point where I would suspect something is wrong.

There are no doctors on Sherdog, and internet diagnosis is just about impossible, so your best bet is to make a visit to a real doctor ASAP, incase it's something serious. Neck injuries are nothing to fuck around with.

that happened to me my first day because all the wrestlers in class were hanging on my neck trying to guillotine me. It went away after a couple days for me, but if its hurting alot its never a bad idea to go to a doctor.

The muscles in your neck have probably spasmed. Go see a doc.
Anti-inflammatory and a massage should help.

But you should still go see a doc/physio because it could be something else.

I cannot move my neck fast in any direction. when i am resting my head anywhere, its a nightmare to put pressure on my neck to get up. As i am typing this, its hurting a bit even if i dont move. It hurts way more if i do move which i try not to do. Laying down and getting up is a nightmare.

what is anti flammatory? Any medicine you guys suggest?

Also if i place my hand on top of my head and push down, it hurts like hell.

anti inflammatory is something to take swelling down which could help you if you muscles are spasmed which im sure they are to some extent. advil is an anti inflammatory but usually prescription anti in. works better cause its stronger, example is naproxen or naprosyn. this is what was prescribed to me for a swollen injury and i noticed it worked great and fairly quickly also. it just might give you some stomach cramps for a week or so til you're used to it.

Thank you for the reply.

I guess i will try some advil and see what happens. Another thing to notice is that normally when people get neck pains, they get it after they wake up next day. Mine was hurting while i was rolling but not that much. It however got worse and worse during end of practice and after practice when i was not moving so much, it stiffened up. From there on its hurting like hell and i cant move it much otherwise the pains are preety bad. Hope that helps to figure out how serious or if it is a spasm.

Does the pain radiate?

You might have muscle spasms, possible you might have a slight tear in one of the muscles, you might have herniated discs - could be a mess of things. Best bet, see a doctor.

how does muscle spasm feel? What about the others, how do they feel?

With all due respect to my fellow posters this is probably the last place I'd come to for medical advice.

probably a muscle strain - give it a few days, if you can get a massage from a therapist in a day or 2 that would also help.

Neck Sprains are somewhat common when grappling, especially if you're a newb.

Neck Sprain

Ice is always your friend.

If you decide to get a massage, be careful, certain types of massages can irritate your injury.

I was going to suggest a vodka and coffee enema, but this guy's probably right.

your problem sounds like you fucked up the discs in your neck or something, sounds really bad, sounds like the worst case neck strain scenario that youve described

ive hurt and strained my neck a lot doing bjj, but nothing as bad as you describe.

First day and you hurt your neck? I hope the students/instructor didnt jack you up..... on the very first day, that's a poor way of doing business.
