regards to his takedowns.

One of many reasons why Fedor is the greatest of all time.

According to Fedor, he was number 3 in Russia national team behind these two guys: Tamerlan Tmenov, eventual silver and bronze olympic medalist, two time silver and two time bronze world championship winner, and Alexander Mikhaylin, eventual three time world championship winner and two bronze, and silver olympic medalist. And between Tmenov and Mikhaylins, they have 13 European gold medals.

Personally, I was and not and probably will not be sold on Combat Sambo. Yes there have been Fedor and Khabib, but yeah. If you have been around while Fedor was killing people, combat sambo competition level seemed questionable, and if you look at guys like Krill being multiple time combat sambo world champion, it makes you wonder. Personally, Fedor's Judo is a lot lot more impressive to me than whatever he did in combat sambo.

It's funny though but totally in line with Fedor's behaviours that Fedor try to brand himself as only Sambo guy. Many years ago when Yoshida was retiring, he mentioned about having a Judo match, exhibition, with Fedor, and he gifted him special gi, and Fedor said he was a Sambo guy, not a Judo guy, and I think politely declined.

Fedor was so damn good in his prime, the way he ran through fighters was impressive

there are like 10 more gifs you should have inluded in OP, you gave some nice thorough history and then skimped on the gifs like wtf

If you need any examples, watch his fight vs Ogawa. He reversed his throw then submitted him via armbar.

Ogawa was an Olympic silver medalist and multiple time world champion. Your grappling has to be at an elite level in order to do what Fedor did.

Combat and sports Sambo comp level is not questionable.
It's super popular in former USSR, plus it gets athletes from Europe and Asia.
Competition is pretty big, although a notch under Olympic sports.

Sambo is very useful but it's more of a trasitional art, it's why Fedor and Khabib rarely get hit(while in their primes). Sambo is one of the best martial arts for blending striking, clinching and takedowns.

The most common thing among Sambo style fighters is they are all good at striking into the clinch or takedowns without getting hit/hit hard.

well he did punch him in the head a bunch of times first. ogawa wasn't really an mma fighter.

Fedor is traditional Sambo. Khabib is a dagestani wrestler who knows sambo.

They still are both great at striking into the clinch without getting hit and using their striking to set up their clinch/takedowns. The way sambo fighters transition from striking to grappling is different/smoother than most non Sambo style fighters.

Khabib himself would say he's a Sambo guy though, he benifits greatly from being from Dagestan though since they have the highest concentration of olympic level wrestlers in the world of any region that size.

Greatest of all time. Pride rules with a prime Fedor would be taking Bones arm home to mother Russia.

His speed was his best attribute imo. He is actually still pretty fast even at his old age.
His chin unfortunately is gone though.
