I'm about to move to Japan and I am having trouble finding a directory or listing of major BJJ or MMA schools anywhere on the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Probably either in Chiba or Matsuyama, but possibly elsewhere. I have partial control over where I end up, so I'd really like to be able to see if the cities in which I am being offered jobs will have places for me to train. Though I wouldn't mention it to my employers, one of my big deciding factors with regards to job location is whether or not I will still be able to pursue my training.
You could take a look at BJJ-Asia.com. Their list of clubs (scroll down, right hand side) in Japan is as follows:
* Academia Az
* Academia Reversal
* Alive Academy
* Alliance Square
* Axis Jiu-Jitsu
* Barbosa Japan
* Club Barbarian
* GRAACA
* Grabaka
* Gracie Barra Japan
* Max Jiu-Jitsu Academy
* Nova Uniao Japan
* Paraestra (Hachioji)
* Paraestra (Hakata)
* Paraestra (Niigata)
* Paraestra (Tokyo)
* Purebred (Kawaguchi)
* Purebred (Omiya & Arena)
* R Blood
* RB Academy
* Tri-Force Jiu-Jitsu
* Trust Jiu-Jitsu
Links on the main site, so hopefully something near you. Alternately, I imagine if you contact whoever runs that blog, they could help you out.
I know nothing about Matsuyama. Chiba would probably be a safer bet, there should be plenty of schools, but it is a big fucking prefecture: you could be close to Tokyo, or a good dojo, or you could be in the middle of nowhere. But I've known many Japanese who commute daily to Tokyo from Chiba for work. Good luck.
Anywhere close to the big cities you'll find lots of martial arts to train.
If you have a chance to be in Tokyo and don't mind the cramped spaces, you'll find more MMA than probably anywhere in the world.
Good luck!
