I can't wait. I actually am a little nervous. I am only a couple hours away from my first BJJ class. I have been wanting to start, but always had something standing in the way. First the wife, then the baby. I have finally convinced my wife that it is a safe practice. I have been reading the threads from this forum for a long time, and hopefully will not spaz out there. Well, I just am so pumped I needed to tell someone.

right on man. you sound like me a year and a half ago. the first couple of months are painful but stick with it. it's addicting and it's worth it.

Stretch stretch and stretch some more and you'll still be sore but its worth it and good luck.

unless you are in good shape expect to tap out to the submissions called "side control", "north south" and "full mount"...LOL.. I remember going back a few years ago and I was in SUCH pathetic shape that is exactly what I did. Tap out from fatigue!

UGH, after a cpl weeks you get adjusted.

Ice and motrin will be your new best friends. The first few months can be rough as your body is adjusting, but it's worth it.

Expect all sorts of minor injuries such as cuts, blisters, mat burns, gi burns, busted toes, joint pains, ball shots, the occassional knee or elbow to the face, tweaked ankles and fingers. Some guys are unlucky enough to break (or tear) something while rolling (happened to me. Broken thumb).

go there with an open mind, there is a method to the madness

It was great. We did a little conditioning first, then learned a few guard passes. We drilled those, then finished with 5 minute rolling with everyone in the class. Very fun. I made sure to take my notes after the class on the stuff I learned. I can't wait until next class.

haha i remember being nervous before my first class. now going to the academy feels like home. have fun bro and keep it up for at least 3 months! things take time.

Does everyones fingers hurt at the beginning. I could barely type on the keyboard. One week down, and it is awesome. Very fun. They told me I was a fast learner, and have good natural instincts...I think it was just because I gave them the money...haha. Anyway it is fun getting tapped, and learning how to defend it and reverse positions.

that's because you are gripping onto the gi to hard. It's a common newbie mistake. :)

mine do a bit, ive been training a little over a month. it doesn't hurt to type though, jsut if i clench my hands real tight

Congrats on signing up - sounds like your enjoying it. Too many posts on "I want to start blah blah" its nice to see "I have started and its awesome"

Good luck, everything gets easier the longer you go. And yup as FLMikeATT said above expect lots of little injuries.. Just stretch good and take your time!! Ask tons of questions.

Well the training has been great! On my second week, and asking lots of questions. The instructor is very helpful. He trains at ATT from time to time, so he has funny stories also. I do have a question though. I have been paired against guys that only have a few months so far, and have been doing well. However, I feel it is because of the big weight and strength difference. Should I feel bad, or just keep on trucking. A couple times last night I just went straight to guard to try something different. Believe me, when they pair me up with some with more experience, I get tapped repeatedly.

Your going to die..

havent you heard.. in bjj.. they teach to KILL

No need to feel bad. Keep on trucking. Going straight into guard is a good idea. If you find some particular strength that you have, try to avoid depending on it. Work on your weak spots. Your doing well, dont get impatient because i can guarantee that even the people who you dominate 9 out of 10 times have something to teach you, everyone has their own little tricks and such that they dont even realise their doing half the time. Its all a learning process
