Why is it the standard to fight two times a year? Seems like everyone does it once they become contenders/champs. I believe fighters should be forced to fight 3 times a year unless they have a documented injury forbidding them from doing so. The UFC needs to come down harder on this shit and rule with an iron fist ffs.

Alex showed us what a good relationship with a champ could be, alas :)

We are stuck with these divas...

Fighting is a young man's game. It take time to build a career. These two things are hard to balance.

In my opinion modern athletic development is making high strung bodies that are prone to breaking down. If we want more and better then "clean" is not the way forward.

For the most part I agree but with some champions, especially the heavier divisions, I don’t think it is always that easy. For example look at Aspinall, obviously the Jon Jones situation didn’t help anything but I’m sure he wants to get in the cage as soon as possible but looking at the upcoming PPV’s it seems it’ll probably be October/November before he fights again. You can’t just throw the HW champ of the world in a co-main to DDP vs Khamzat like you could with a FLW or BW fight.

That wouldn't work with the size of the roster, salaries, etc.

There are also limited spots to headline big PPVs for title fights.

Not to mention the problem with matchmaking, fighters ducking, injuries.

Much easier to get someone on 12k/12k to fight frequently against nobodies outside the rankings.

Pay is too high, gotta keep 'em hungry

They should put pay incentives/bonuses tied to activity rate. I doubt it was actually in his contract but Pereira knew the more he fought as champ, the more big paydays he'd get.

He's gone quite now partly because it's quite obvious the UFC cut what he'd get paid on cards now, due to losing his title, despite him saving the UFC several times on quick turnarounds and him still being one of the few recognizable names out there.

the UFC does things like market fights, "save Australian champ for austrailan card" ect ect This things make it so you can't play fast and loose with match making.

Trim down the roster and number of cards. Get rid of the scrubs and only keep the elites.

For the most part I agree but sometimes the athletic commissions won't even let you fight 6 months or more after a fight depending on the damage taken

They're required to have a certain number of events per year due to their contract. Harder to pull that off with injuries, constant renegotiations with fighters as their careers continue, limitations on travel and other factors.

I miss the old pride days where guys would fight every month lol.

The downside to that is examples like Gary goodrige though. Should be more time off between KO's.

It's especially bullshit when you do it fall/winter like some certain fighters always do. Take 9-10 months off and then fight again 4 months later?

Like what is the logic there other than you simply don't feel like fighting in the summer? Or rather on certain cards and their locations...

Legally the UFC can’t make them fight. The fighters are independent contractors
