You described the line perfectly. There's a difference between giving up at the first sign of trouble and knowing that you're out of options. If you get hit with a strike and all of a sudden you're blind and there's an unusual level of pain like Lawler vs MacDonald 2 (he didn't tap, but he had every right to do so) tapping shouldn't be demonized.
Nobody who does this for a living is tapping to anything less than being FOOOKING ROCKED.
Like you're not out but the fucking tinnitus kicked in and your limbs are not responding properly to your brain and this is the biggest defensive movement you can muster.
