Sorry, but Silva - Stann, while entertaining in a "just bleed" kinda way, wasn't close to JJ-Gus. That was on a whole different level on pretty much all parameters except the wild swinging and knock downs.

Jones vs Gustaffson was a good fight, but the only reason it was great and everyone was screaming was because Jones got beat really bad. Take that away it was just a good fight, not great.

It was basically Jones kicks vs Gus`s boxing, because Gus dictated the fight to stay on the feet. Something the judges obviously didn`t consider. Jones basically played into Gus`s game and won because of them lethal kicks.

But you can't take those things away. You can't ignore that part of what makes fights great is such factors as importance of the fight, level of the fighters, general excitement, etc.

You could just as easily say that Stann - Silva was a pretty laclustre fight between two non-contenders, that was actually kinda boring when excluding a combined minute or so of wild exchanges.

Many great fights are better for their context. Wand/Stann also benefited from context.

If it was a prelim fight between two TUF cast offs and in Denver then it would just be good too. The atmosphere with Wand back in Japan after so many years, the Japanese crowd dynamic, and so on really gave it an extra oomph.

Bermudez/Grice is a fight that was great no matter the context and was solidly ahead everything else for me until the war in the main on Saturday.

I do agree that context added to Jones/Gus but completely disagree that it wasn't a great fight on its own merits. I also disagree with the guy putting down Silva/Stann for being a brawl though.
