We are a bit past the halfway point of 2016, what do you think the current FOY candidates are?

My choice is Thurman vs Porter.

My call too so far. Vargas/Salido was great too

Thurman v Porter for sure great fight !

Toss up between Salido/Vargas and Thurman/Porter. I had a big ass smile on during both.

I'm not as high on Thurman-Porter as most. Good fight between good fighters, but Vargas and Salido are no slouches and that fight was a fair bit better IMO.

Vargas vs Salido is a close second. But I gave Thurman vs Porter the edge for the increased fire-power.

The top two choices were only a week apart too.

My vote is Salido/Vargas.

I preferred Thruman/Porter too Vargas/Salido. More skill and talent on display IMO.

Both were great.

Fantastic fight, the chin on Porter is ridiculous.

Both were great.

Vargas/Salido was a blood n' guts type of fight, like Gatti vs Ward. That's great and all, but sometimes when I am watching a fight like that I just find myself wishing one of them had some real knockout power so that the lack of defense carries a real consequence.

I remember watching Gatti vs Ward 1 with my dad when it was aired live. I remember him saying something like, "This is what happens when two guys have more chin and heart than skill and punching power."

Thurman/Porter reminded me more of say, Toney vs McCallum. Not quite the same level of talent, sure but if you're making the Gatti/Ward comparison, thats the one that comes to mind for Thurman/Porter for me.

Just to be clear, I was saying Vargas vs Salido was comparable to Ward vs Gatti, in a way. Thurman vs Porter could never just put their hands down and tee off with over a 1,000 shots a piece. Somebody would have gotten knocked out.

Man is Thurman/Porter really a standard so far? Weakest half year in a while. Dont get me wrong good fight but not special, some terrible clinching, IQ and backpeddling in that one. Not alot of technical skill as expected considering Porters style is all athleticism with his strength and cardio namely but Thurman struggled alot and i think this fight proved the ppl whove called him overrated right. Drama swings were there and it was well matched but eh. Vargas/Salido was better.

Conlan/Nelson
Dortifos/Kalenha
Vargas/Salido

as the clear top 3 for me, whatever order but im feelin Conlan/Nelson so far

then

Bellew/Makabu
JSK/Kamegai
Thurman/Porter
Doran/Keeler (short but kinda the Ferguson/Vannata of boxing this year tho not anywhere as good)

Jardon/JCS and Gradovich/Galicia were fun but way too sloppy and shit technique to be in a FOTY discussion for me.

hopefully the 2nd half of the year is stronger

Salish/Vargas was a level above Thurman Porter for me.

I didn't think the clinching was that bad in Porter vs Thurman. The IQ of the fight was higher than Salido vs Vargas, in my opinion. The fighters actually had game plans and opposing styles, and I enjoy seeing two fighters trying to impose their game plan on the other.

Backpedaling is not a detraction from a boxing match, it's part of the sport. Thurman was trying to create distance, Porter was trying to close distance, that is what made the fight interesting to watch. In a way, Salido and Vargas just stood there and punched each other the whole time. That gets a little bit repetitive.

Plus, Thurman and Porter are more explosive. Could you imagine if they just stood there and punched each other in the face like Vargas and Salido did?

Thurman struggled against a top 5 opponent, so he's overrated?
Vargas/ Salido was hardly some technical chess match either, yet you state it was better than Thurman/Porter after saying there was not much skill on display in that fight?

I mean, I guess if you didn't enjoy it, you didn't enjoy it. What can anyone say? But your criticisms seem a bit off to me. I saw a lot more technique in Porter/Thurman than in Salido/Vargas.
