What do you guys think of him?

I'm a sucker for genius detective shows... Sherlock Holmes and Adrian Monk are my two favorites.

But I never got into Poirot just based on his description. He seemed like a snobbier version of Sherlock Holmes, but French.

But now I'm 2 episodes into the ABC murders (free if you have prime video) and I'm starting to like him. Or at least the version that John malkovich is playing.

He seems like a snobbier version of Sherlock Holmes because he's French.

I like the Kenneth Branaugh version of him in the recent movies. I also like these mystery detective shows, so I'll check the show out. Thanks for the recommendation sherbro

I like the Albert Finney Poirot in Murder On The Orient Express (best ensemble cast ever), Peter Ustinov is my favourite version, both Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun are great movies.
Wasn't keen on David Suchet but I do like the Kenneth Brannagh movies.

Sherlock is my favourite, I've been watching different versions a lot recently, 7 Per Cent Solution and Private Life Of were both excellent, as was Murder By Decree. The Roger Moore Sherlock in ...In New York wasn't the best, but still a fun movie. The 83 version of Hounds is one of my favourites, and I just bought the first season of the Jeremy Brett series on Blu Ray

You might want to check his nationality, he's supposed to be Belgian unless ABC have changed it.

Never really was a fan of Poiret either .
Don't French and Belgians have similarities ? Which is why a lot of people that Van Damme was a Frenchie before explaining he was Belgian.

Really I think Suchet basically plays on the idea of Agatha Christie's detectives as being very subtle like Joan Hicksons Miss Maple around the same era were its the supporting characters who play up more larger than life personalities. I think you could argue Columbo worked in the same kind of way, Faulk would deliberately underplay the character and let the guest stars "go large".

I think you could argue thats why all of them lasted such along time in those roles because the lead characters persona wasnt the main draw of the shows.

My favorite genre. I love detective series and movies. Poirot is great, I enjoyed ABC Murders. Loved the classic Murder on The Orient, Death on the Nile, as well as the new ones. 10 Little Indians, and Then there were None are also good. Sherlock was some of the best tv ever, Cumberbatch was amazing. I watch the classic with Rathbone as well.
I just started Midsommer Murders on Amazon, plenty of seasons to watch. Also Wallander and Young Wallander.

Do you even know who Poirot is? He isn't French, he's Belgian and he would certainly correct you on that.
I suggest you watch on Brit TV on You Tube.

Having been a fan of the books from an early age, I see David Suchet as doing the best job of playing the character that Agatha Christie created. He really studied the character.

In preparation for the role, David Suchet read every book and short story in which Poirot appeared: "I had my file on one side of me and a pile of stories on the other side and day after day, week after week, I ploughed through most of Agatha Christie's novels about Hercule Poirot and wrote down characteristics until I had a file full of documentation of the character. And then it was my business not only to know what he was like, but to gradually become him."

During the filming of the first season, David Suchet almost left the production during an argument with a director, insisting that Poirot's mannerisms (specifically, putting a handkerchief down before sitting on a park bench) be featured.
David Suchet always stayed in character as Poirot whether the cameras were rolling or not.
Several days before filming, David Suchet would often dress up and act as Hercule Poirot. He would immerse himself in the role by acting like the detective even with his own family at home. This made his transition to the role easier when filming started.
In order to successfully pull off Poirot's characteristic walk, David Suchet said he imagined clenching a coin in between his butt cheeks.

Suchet told the Radio Times that crime writer Christie's family ordered him not to portray Poirot as a figure of fun. He said: "In the books, as opposed to some of the films that have been made, he is not a comic character.

I really enjoyed the Agatha Christie novels so I’m sure I would enjoy the movies / shows as well.

I prefer fictional murderer Serge Storms.

Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett from ITV were a decent watch too.

Love Poirot. I actually read my first Poirot novel based on a recomendation I got on here.

As for movies and TV David Suchet will always be Poirot to me, but it's kind of cool to see how different actors do the character.

Have you seen the video of how he developed the voice?

Fun fact, Joan Hickson used to live in a cottage in a village where some of my mates lived. We used to visit her house when we were on acid as kids

PBS David Suchet Poirot is the ultimate version. Doesn't try to be too serious except maybe the final episodes.

Kenneth modern version sucked. Showtime on demand had Finney train movie and tried to watch it, but turned it off for later.

Yeah, that's pretty much what the French do.

Also, you've got to love those pre-2000 British detective shows. I remember watching one (Midsomer Murders I think) where the detective is going to meet with one of the murder suspects in her house. He goes in, it's all tense and whatnot, and then she offers him sherry. The detective sits there having a nice alcoholic beverage with the murder suspect while he's on the case. Need more of that on TV. Seems so cordial and civilized.
