She has an older dog. We're not exactly sure how old as she found her on the street and took her home more than a decade ago. We're guessing she's around 15 or 16. She lost her hearing over 2 years ago and can barely walk. She's been on pain meds this whole time. We have to mix it in with her food. She has 2 different pain meds. One for breakfast and another kind for lunch and dinner.

Having said that, she's a happy dog and we love her. So far this year, she has spent over 8k on vet visits and pain meds. My fiancee thought she the dog had cancer and breathed a sigh of relief when it turned out negative. We're still waiting on the bill for that one.

It's tough because we both love the dog and spoil the hell out of her. It's to the point where it will be expected if we wake up and the dog doesn't.

Put her to sleep.

Then use the life-insurance money to pay for the dog's medical bills.

That's sad but I would do whatever I could if my dog was happy. I wouldn't let my dog get surgery again when she got older because it was really hard on her and she'd have stomach issues for months after.

My neighbors are in the same boat. Loved dog is deteriorating and takes a lot of meds to keep it pain free. She's still a great happy dog but it's so sad watching her slow down so much.

Been there before. When my sister's dog got cancer it really affected his hips, and we made a family decision to get him radiation treatments. My sister and her husband ran themselves into a massive credit card debt because of it, and I had to ferry the dog back and forth like 8 times, 2 hours each way. I didn't mind cause that dog was awesome, but I had just started a new job and it cut into my schedule big time.

The treatments worked, but the dog's hips didn't get better. My sister wound up putting him to sleep anyway a year later. She acted all non-chalant about it too, and I'm still mad about that to this day. I say fuck it, if you really love something and you choose to go all in, then you should stay all in until the bitter end.

it's not a child, it can be easily replaced IMO (i realize that sounds harsh, but i mean...…)
no reason to spend 8k on any pet, ever. I mean can you claim it as a dependent on your tax return?

Obviously I've never been a big pet guy, so i mean no offense to any animal lovers in here.

You should have killed that dog when it hit 2k and just told her it died.

Being willing to sacrifice for the well being of another is an admirable trait. As long as you can afford it.

If she put the dog down at first sight of a $500 vet bill, would you really trust her to stick around if something bad happened to you?

I was ready to drop 6k for my GSD to have surgery to remove his infected spleen during the weekend without any thought about how much it would have cost me. It wasnt until further xrays showed that my GSD would have been worse without the spleen blocking the spread of the malignant tumor that they had no other option to put him down that hour.

I would not muster more than a grand for a pet.

I do have full pet insurance however for my 3 cats as a matter of course.

I feel it's easier morally and emotionally to exist within the insurance framework. Otherwise things can get crazy.

I dont mean to be rude, but pain meds for a dog? Sounds like a scam. How do you know that it's working, or that you're not getting dog-meth, dog-PCP, or something?

I love dogs. But man...I wouldn't spend that much. There comes a point where their quality of life just isn't there anymore. I would absolutely hate to do it. But you knew going in when you own a dog they can deteriorate very quickly sometimes and they won't be with you forever.

Save her the pain and put her to sleep.

Probably accumulated 8k over the years including x-rays, examinations, blood testing etc. Just one blood testing and an x-ray exam alone run you 1k. If its a scam, you can try to use another vet to see if there is another opinion. Its always best to at least have a friend whos also a good friend of a vet to get an unbiased opinion

Same, as long as I have money, my dog can use it, he's my best friend along with my wife.

you can replace kids to, and dogs are better then kids anyway

sounds pretty selfish to keep that dog alive if it needs to constantly be on pain medication

*Randomly tosses dog from the roof...

You likely knew she was going to do this before you asked her to marry you. You know when a woman loves animals like that.

So you knew it, and accepted it. No point in complaining about it now.

My wife is crazy about dogs as well. She dropped 3K on our new aussie because it looked like the aussie that passed...
