Anyone else hoping to see this/think it's a possibility for the New Year's card?

Serg would smoke him.

I think it would be a more competitive match than that. Would like to give it to Fedor but I dunno....

I think this is his best possible match outside of the UFC though ... by far.

Sergei and Fedor are great friends and Sergei has too much hespect for Fedor to fight him.

I remember reading that Sergei wanted to train with Fedor, I wasn´t aware they were friends though. I know Sergei also fought Aleks, so I figured he wouldn´t have a problem fighting Fedor

Didn't Fedor state that he will not fight his countrymen? With that said, I'd love to see it.

I hope that´s not the case since there´s a good amount of HW´s outside the UFC that are Russian. Also, The Empire Shall Fall rules.

Sergei said he didn't want to do it when they were both free agents in 2012 and with him offering to help train Fedor I doubt it's something he is considering now.

Also, the only television partner this event has is an American one and for sure they are not looking to do Fedor vs. another Russian.

Kharitonov is too high level for his first fight back.

Who does he fight first is the question. Considering his age, last run, and ring rust I would give him a simulated Rank of #29.
Unlike the other older guys in UFC HW he has been out of comp for a while.

<the below assumes they have resonable access to the Bellator and M1 rosters/rankings and rosters will stay the same through Fedor's comeback career (they obviously wont)/it's just a rough draft of a reasonable arch>

START
1.Volkov (skip to #2 if Fedor won't fight a Russian)
2.Ortiz (or Grabowski if they can't convince him to move up)
3.Kharitonov (or King Mo if they have less M1 access than I think or he won't fight a Russian/Should be his first fight if he only does two non-UFC fights.)
4.McGeary (or Kongo if he won't move up)
5.Davis
SIGN TO UFC

In the meantime they need to work on getting higher HW and LHW to extend Fedor outside of UFC. Between Bellator, Samurai, and maybe M1 they should have more than enough reasources. Travis Browne is someone accessible, try for him.

mistake of nature is my go to insult since i read that interview

I have heard Fedor's opponent is Japanese (not Ishii).

I don't get why anybody would be exited for this fight. Sergei gets wrecked by anybody that knows how to grapple. Barnett is no slouch, but he effortlessly walked through Sergei and subbed him in Strikeforce.

Phil Davis is the best most competitive option outside the UFC. Segei isnt even top 20.
