I remember watching it and nobody at the bar knew what happened till the replay.
I wonder if he planned it in advance knowing AA or just thought of it on the spot. Pretty genius, knocking someone out of the air when they try a flying knee, who would have thought of that as a strategy ? It's not in any martial art lol.
Fedor goes from 0 to 60 in 1 second.
To be honest I think Fedor looked like shit in that fight. I was there live and from the beginning it felt as if Fedor was sluggish and a step behind. This was around the time Fedors boxing coach started saying in interviews that he notices a decline in Fedor and that he thinks he is slowing down. Also at this time Fedor lost his first fight in Combat Sambo to Ivanov and was starring in shitty action films. Still somehow, some way the GOAT remained cool under pressure while getting boxed up a bit and swatted AA out of the sky for an epic KO.
His hands are visibly shaky. He was shaking them like he was nervous.
AA made him backup a lot and set the pace which was unusual as Fedor usually pressed forward and set the pace. I think Fedor was so used to being the faster one, AA's hand speed and leg kicks threw him off.
But when you hit like a mule you can never be ruled out at any moment and he capitalized on a perfect second. AA later said the fight plays out in his mind over and over and he wishes he never would have tried the knee. He got cocky and wanted to be flashy.
Still, IDK if he would have won. He was flustering Fedor but that was about it... if it would have come down to straight trading blows I think Fedor would have gotten more aggressive and the better of AA's poor jaw or tripped and mounted him from the clinch eventually.

Yup, this was the fight where Fedor started to look sloppy. He looked sloppy from this fight to Henderson. Plus he lost in Combat Sambo to a guy he beat less than a year before. I think he fought sloppy because he divorced his first wife and wasn't into fighting, it all seemed to go downhill from there for him. He had been talking retirement around this time as well.
