it may be basic but alot of the times, the basics is what you need to win.

And given Fedor's body size and core strength, I say that's probably what works probably among the best for him.

Sweet. This is one of the mount reversals i'm most thankful for having learned early into my training...
Because i really, really hate the fat guys who can only use the "smothering" submissions - like getting mount, arm around your head, put their chest/belly on your face, and smother you until they submit you via cholesterol-choke.

I love Fedor and all...almost unhealthily, but this is something I learned in my first week of jiu-jitsu.

I guess it doesn't hurt to reinforce the basics. Basics is what wins fights. I suppose it's just kind of weird to see the greatest MMA fighter of our time teaching a basic mount reversal at a seminar. I would imagine that those Slovaks have some basic ground skills.

Yeah, I thought that was kind of wierd too...
Especially making a YouTube vid out of it.

Basics = good
the instruction on that clip = bad

I love seeing high level guys show some real basic stuff cuz they usually do something slightly different or add something that I never knew, but these clips of Fedor teaching remind me that just because you are great at doing something, doesn't me you can teach it.

You guys also have to realize that this was just some dick who video taped a seminar, chopped it up and is trying to sell a video of it.

He very well could have been teach some very clueless beginners.

Also, Fedor has amazing core strength.

most the seminar he teaches at are to people who aren't high level people

If you see his videos/compilations where he's giving a seminar, he's teaching ti mostly fans who want to pick up a thing or two.

What he teaches Kirill Sidelnikov (his protege) isn't waht he'd teach to people here.

When your opponent is on the top he will rarely make the mistake to wrap his arm against your neck like it is shown in this video. If he does he is probably clueless, so why prepare for a clueless opponent.
Like one poster said earlier, this video is taken out of context hence hard to judge of Fedor teaching ability or core techniques for that matter

upa = doesn't really work at higher levels, I can't even remember the last time I've been upa'd tbh...

hip escape ftw

Up your's, buddy! Fedor provided a written consent to selling this video. As for the footage: well yeah, it's been shot at the seminar, but by a professional cameraman, not an amateurish fan with shaky hands.

Regarding the move: you gotta look beyond that. Yes, Fedor shows his twist on a lot of basic moves on the DVD, and I doubt you'll get a lot of benefit from the ground game techniques he discusses if you're a BJJ black belt. But, hey, you can always learn something in terms of striking and takedowns in that case. And if you aren't a world-class expert in grappling, Fedor's clear explanation and invaluable tips is all you need to get your ground game up to speed in no time. If you're looking for fancy stuff you won't be able execute in the fights anyways, look elsewhere: this DVD is one solid pack of meaty advice with no fluff; in short - the stuff that is *guaranteed* to work in your next MMA bout.

Not so: he alluded a number of times during both the seminar and on the DVD that this is the technique he teaches fellow Red Devils team members. I agree, as a lot of people in this thread mentioned, guaranteed to work basics taken to the top level are your best bet in a fight, unlike fancy, but hardly applicable moves supposedly tought for the inner circle. Actually, if you notice Fedor fight, he doesn't use flying armbars or spinning roundhouse kicks, yet he always seems to win in an impressive fashion.

While Upa is a relatively basic technique, it's important to understand it. My instructor has begun to show a little more advanced stuff. He showed a hip escape that transitioned into a little mini-Upa to escape full mount.

Relatively simple, but his upa was much better than mine and I had a much more difficult time in performing the technique.

I saw Damien Maia - one of the world's best grapplers - use full mount and wrapping his arm around Jason McDonald's head in exact same manner multiple times during their fight in the last UFC 87. So I guess it's not so basic, and not so uncommon.

Thank you for your opinion. I am trying to find principles and grapple along those principles. According to my experience, fights I saw and opinion from more experienced fighters i kind of decided to follow the principle to not wrap my arm around sby's neck while mounting except if I can use my shoulder to press on his face and control his arm with my free arm (even then i dont trust it too much)

that being said I am very interested by your answer. Also i saw some BJJ instructional showing that wrap. Could you tell me which round and when in the fight you saw that? I will check it out.

thank you forehand
laurent
