Fedor on Rousey

I'm going to guess that everyone who agrees with Fedor didn't punch a woman in the face today.

To date, [Rousey] stands out as number one in the world rankings," said Fedor. "But I do not like that she misses a lot of punches, which leads to painful reception. I do not advocate such tactics, especially for women.

I thought that this quote was particularly interesting, so being the curious guy that I am I wanted to actually see what Rousey's striking stats at UFC 190 were vs Fedor and other fighters.

Rousey vs Correia
Rousey 19/32 significant strikes, 59% accuracy
Correia 9/14 significant strikes, 64% accuracy

http://www.fightmetric.com/fight-details/60c62fb7bd17a8b3

Fedor Emelianenko, Career
51% strike accuracy

http://www.fightmetric.com/fighter-details/b8da6f5c80ae2d15

Maybe that's deceptive since Fedor grapples a lot so I thought I'd pull up the fights where he actually throws a significant number of strikes. Looking at the last 5 of Fedor's fights where he landed more than 15 strikes (a lot of them were less than 15 strikes)

Fedor vs Monson, 50/131, 38%, http://www.fightmetric.com/fight-details/21c712a68a2d167e
Fedor vs Coleman, 19/24, 79%, http://www.fightmetric.com/fight-details/172346850e7d24d6
Fedor vs Filipovich, 50/132, 37%, http://www.fightmetric.com/fight-details/4c23c2a8ca4d9700
Fedor vs Kohsaka, 88/162, 41%, http://www.fightmetric.com/fight-details/9661d43a374e5a60
Fedor vs Nogueira, 65/144, 45%, http://www.fightmetric.com/fight-details/1b960c59351664c4

I thought maybe it's just Fedor so decided to look at the UFC's significant strike accuracy among the top fighters. Maybe it's just Rousey and Fedor.

So, I went to the UFC website and looked up the top 10 fighters in the UFC by Significant Strike accuracy. Here's what came up...

1 Alistair Overeem 74.52
2 Trevor Smith 63.68
3 Anderson Silva 63.22
4 Fabio Maldonado 59.36
5 Ben Saunders 59.07
6 Jimy Hettes 57.29
7 Cain Velasquez 57.24
8 Fabricio Werdum 56.91
9 Jessica Andrade 55.26
10 Kyle Noke 54.57

So, Rousey had 59% strike accuracy in UFC 190. It sure doesn't look like she missed a lot of strikes to me.

I think the most you can say is that Rousey got hit quite a bit and wasn't defending well. However, she sure didn't miss many of her strikes.

Rousey's still nowhere near elite, but in terms of her UFC 190 performance I don't think anyone can legitimately claim that she was missing significantly more than anyone else or that she can't hit with power.

It's fair that Fedor "doesn't like that she misses a lot of punches", but it's not that he was one to shy away from swinging wildly and missing.

And no, I'm not saying Ronda would beat Fedor in a boxing match.

At least not easily.

But the really pathetic thing is that you actually believe that Ronda would beat Fedor. Feminism coupled with ignorance is a dangerous thing.

inbe4 apologists claim that hovering around 50% accuracy is intentional; it’s part of combat SAMBO to miss half your punches and repeatedly break your hand due to technique!!

Malthian you are really overthinking this.

But I guess you have nothing better to do.

It's late on a Friday. And UFC isn't until tomorrow. ;)

And it really was just me being curious. When people say something without stats to back them up, I want to know if it's true. Kind of like when politicians claim XXX% of Y is true, or that the numbers published by ZZZ aren't real. I like to check that stuff too.

What Fedor said has nothing to do with any stats whatsoever. IF you want a breakdown of what Fedor meant, read post #100.

I get that he doesn't like seeing women fight. He's made that clear before.

What leapt out at me was specifically saying that she missed a lot of punches or that stylistically she was trying to miss a lot of punches. It just made me wonder if it was actually true, which it turns out it wasn't.

And you proved Trevor smith is a better striker than Anderson silva. Solid work.

I didn't interpret, I just posted the numbers. Don't shoot the messenger.

And it's pretty common knowledge that superior athleticism can result in more effective striking over technique. The best technique in the world doesn't help if the other person throws faster or strikes from unexpected angles.

It doesn't mean that Smith is a superior striker technically, just that the stats are that he's landed more.

It is what it is.

Same as Ronda - Fedor started out as an elite judoka, he was medaling in the Russian national championship even in the open category (!) and represented Russia in the judo worldcup where he also won medals. Striking he learned well into his twenties when he started training for combat Sambo and MMA. Ronda and Fedor are not that different in style, they are both very explosive and like to throw and armbar people…

Ronda however has zero class, embarrassing mannerisms, and a shallow mind.

P.S. They still should make those 57 babies. Would watch.

Did she get you rustled also? Well done Ronda...:icon_lol:
