Developing story. The Feds have asked the courts to stop proceedings as they have found an alternative method to cracks Farook’s phone.

"The government has now successfully accessed the data stored on Farook’s iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple Inc.," the court filing reads, mentioning the San Bernardino shooter who owned the phone.

Speculation is that the Israeli company Cellebrite assisted the FBI in the decryption process; however , neither the FBI, nor Cellebrite have commented on this.

While this can be seen as a win for privacy, the flip side of the coin is that the FBI now has the means to access iPhone 5Cs, if they so choose, without needing Apple. However, there is small solace for privacy advocates to take that the encryption was not mitigated at Apple's hands.

Back to the drawing board for Apple.

i think the feds only have the ability to decrypt the 5c - Apple technology going forward seems to be safe - have no idea what the court ruling would've set a precedence towards.

Apple is still eager to do whatever the fuck their ChiCom masters order them to do though.

Good. It allows apple to keep developing security technology to keep people out of our phones.

Honestly Apple can go to hell

OH and any person going to make an iPhone comment shouldnt. Because I could easily make a government comment and how you wouldn't even be in your home safely if it wasn't for your government.

Shocking that so many people out of fear and conspiracy theories sided with Apple. They (Apple) are a corrupt mega corporation that exploits the workers and poor in other countries as well.

I trust the FBI and all the brave men and women (many of them former military) who wrk for the FBI over the opinions of some elitist Corporate execs who want special privileges to spy on Americans.

You actually think Apple cares about you?

Weren't the wiki leaks conspiracy crowd claiming that there was evidence that the major tech companies were complicit with government sharing of intelligence?

Basically you are siding with a corporation over a democratic government that represents you. The special interests of a few vs a reputable government agency.

I doubt the FBI had any trouble breaking the encryption to begin with, since Apple was known to be in bed with NSA over its PRISM program. Unless the NSA is refusing to share information, this has been one big show.

I thought the 5 was when their impregnability began.

Well, this backfired for Apple.

I agree. It was a big show. The purpose was more to set a precedent that the government has even more power to bully private business.

I trust apple much more than a government agency with my data. Apple has shown once that it cares about my security and privacy, I don't care the purpose or intentions of why they do. The government very obviously doesn't and continues to prove that it doesn't. If the only way go a powerful entity to care about my individual security is to sell me a phone so be it.

Apple was never going to "win" this no matter what happened but I commend their efforts. This is probably the best outcome for them.

How do the bottom of those jack boots taste?

How so? Now the government knows how to do it themselves and can do it to anyone if they wish. If apple had just assisted, they probably could have kept their secrets to themselves and even come off as doing something noble to help the "war on terror."

Good that the fbi did the right thing. As per usual John Oliver hit the nail on the head.

I can't understand the idea of a mass murderer's phone being a symbol of some sort of right to privacy debate. I can't see applauding Apple for not helping in this situation. Making apple sound like heroes in this instance just seems off to me. I don't get it.
