FBI to Apple: Well if you don't do it, we will seize your source code

Big brother in full control.

Yeah, it's pretty astonishing how many people swallowed the bullshit the FBI was shilling. The astute divined their true intentions rather quickly. It's amazing after everything Snowden released how gullible and eager so many were to trust them.

Spooky indeed. The WhatsApp isn't even terror activity related. I wonder what "for the greater good" excuse they're using to try and get access.

I think it's a truly messed up thing that the generation born today will grow up being under constant surveillance.

Yeah, sorry Obama, I'm all for the "Black Box". ...and if it can be done, it's naive to think people will rely on corporate/commercial providers over which states hold leverage.
I'm afraid they're just going to have to think "outside the box" for their approaches to security and justice.
Mind you, although Obama used the terrorism and child pornography examples, it actually sounds like he's concerned about digital currency and tax avoidance.

by many accounts, lots of people with power are :eek::eek::eek:s. and terrorism? that is so commonplace these days.
of course the powers to be worry about money, not people or children.

Obviously, over the long-term, this will kill the American electronic security industry. Why would you buy American technologies to secure your personal or company's information if you buy from another country's companies that won't require backdoors, etc?

What I'm more interested in is the effect it will have on the American technology industry in general. IE -- iPhones, Windows, etc.

If you can't trust the security of your iPhone or computer, surely people will stop buying American technology products altogether and foreign competitors will take over the entire technology industry.

And since everything is 'smart' or becoming 'smart', that means everything down to televisions and watches.

I´m just surprised they can´t open the phone themselves.

It's bullshit, but what would you guys say in this hypothetical scenario.

A terrorist group stole a nuke, they plan to nuke New York. One of the terrorists who got killed has info on his iPhone where the nuke is going to get launched from. This is 100% accurate and it will happen within a week. Authorities are not lying (lol) either. Would that be a valid reason to force apple to unlock the iPhone? If yes, what is the line?

I'm less concerned about Apple retrieving the data themselves, than with Apple being forced to create a compromised product to give to the FBI for them to retrieve the data.
Even more so, the legal precedent that sets.

I haven't been following this issue. Someone told me that what the FBI is asking for is access that Apple had to give to the Chinese government in order to be allowed into Chinese markets. Is that true? If it is, I say give the codes to the FBI as well and blame Apple for digging their own grave.

EDIT: a quick Google reveals that Apple DID give China a look at the source code in order to gain access to Chinese markets. Fuck Apple. The US government is about as in the right as I could possibly consider it when it comes to spying on its own citizens.

I don't believe for one second the Feds don't already have every bit of info that phone. They're just trying to set a legal precedent for more power grabbing.

How exactly would authorities know the iphone had that info? The magic of hypothetical scenarios?

China supposedly did a "security audit" to establish whether Apple had already provided back doors to their products for the US Government. This was something that had been alleged (by Snowden for instance), and alleged against the Chinese company Huawei as well (given as a reason to refuse them state contracts in both Australia and the US). China didn't receive encryption keys or a compromised version of iOS.

Didn't half the War Room support the govt vs Apple? I recall being astonished how all the anti-government types in here were suddenly in favor of Big Brother because they're scares of some Muslims.

you're right. this article was an easy read tobring me up to speed http://www.newsweek.com/2016/03/11/what-apple-do-when-china-knocked-backdoor-430993.html?piano_t=1
