Full Metal Jacket

movieposter_en.jpg

Synopsis: A pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.

Honorable mentions: Rambo & Come and See

First half of FMJ is great then it's pretty meh . I go Hsmburger Hill as best Vietnam movie

Never agreed with that, I think the second half is just as good as the first, indeed I think you could argue the second half is one of the most direct influences on Tarantino's career, the heightened monologs, the use of existing pop music, etc. The very end with the sniper is an amazing set piece as well.

A lot of Nam films from this period do I think suffer a bit from being not so good versions of The Deer Hunter and Apoc Now, Full Metal Jacket does offer something rather different to the typical story of "good men finding war is hell".

Havn't seen anything else in that list. War films are not my jam but I feel i should see full metal jacket.

Anything else on there 'must watch'?

agreed, I've never bought the argument that only the first half of FMJ is worth watching. It's very iconic and quotable of course with the amazing R Lee Ermey performance but the 2nd half of the film is just as crucial as the first. as a movie about the dehumanizing effects of war and how it forces people to assimilate and close off their emotions in order to survive I think it works very well. Kubrick is one of the all time great directors and FMJ is no exception
