There are not too many movies not at least based on a book.

Some of AFI's greatest movies like Godfather, and Gone with the wind are based on books.

It is kind of like asking who are the hottest women out there with nice curves.

Well, based on a true (or somewhat) true story i will say Goodfellas. As another poster commented, way too many movies based on books to really narrow it down.

Books: Braveheart, Godfather, No Country for Old Men

True Story: City of God, Schindler's List, Raging Bull, The Imitation Game (I think. I really loved it, but it's still pretty new. I'll see how it holds up over time.)

I suppose my favorite movie that was based on a book is John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), which was based on the novella "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. (though written under the pen name Don A. Stuart).

Got to go with 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' as my overall favorite book-to-film adaptation.

I generally said that whenever an entertainment medium adapts a 'true story' into a movie, 99.99% of the time the source material is butchered.
