Might be jumping the gun here as we're less than two weeks into the 9th generation of consoles but I'm curious to know people's games of the generation. Let's try to set some ground rules.

The games have to have been originally released on the 8th generation of consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, and anything on the Switch up until this point). Remakes count (Shadow of the Colossus), remasters (The Last of Us) do not. Anything originally released cross gen on either side counts (Metal Gear Solid 5, Assassin's Creed Valhalla). Obviously there are some big games on the horizon like Cyberpunk, so fair to say things could change.

Here are some of the best reviewed games of the last gen to jog your memory (Metacritic score).

Super Mario Odyssey (97)
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (97)
Red Dead Redemption 2 (97)
Metal Gear Solid 5 (95)
God of War (94)
Celeste (94)
Super Mario 3D World (93)
Super Smash Bros: Ultimate (93)
Person 5 (93)
The Witcher 3 (93)
Uncharted 4 (93)
The Last of Us Part 2 (93)
Inside (93)
Half Life: Alyx (93)
Resident Evil 2 (93)
Bloodborne (92)
Hades (92)
Overwatch (91)
Shadow of the Colossus (91)
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (91)
Spelunky 2 (91)
Monster Hunter: World (90)
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (90)
Ori and the Will of the Wisps (90)
Hollow Knight (90)
Tetris Effect (90)
Devil May Cry 5 (90)
Horizon: Zero Dawn (89)
Dark Souls 3 (89)
Slay the Spire (89)
Stardew Valley (89)
Titanfall 2 (89)
Apex Legends (89)
Dragon Age: Inquisition (89)
NieR: Automota (88)
Fallout 4 (88)
Dishonored 2 (88)
Super Mario Maker (88)
Super Mario Maker 2 (88)
Doom Eternal (88)
Nioh (88)
Batman: Arkham Knight (87)
Marvel's Spider-Man (87)
Destiny 2 (87)
Final Fantasy VII Remake (87)
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (87)
Resident Evil 7 (86)
Doom (85)
Halo 5 (84)
Ghost of Tsushima (83)
Assassins Creed: Black Flag (83)
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (83)
Assassin's Creed: Origins (81)
Assassin's Creed: Valhalla (81)
Fortnite (81)
Far Cry 5 (81)

My picks
1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2. The Witcher 3
3. Metal Gear Solid 5
4. Fallout 4
5. Spider-Man

Honorable mentions to Resident Evil 2 and Apex Legends.

Edit: just picked up Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU2 so those could creep onto the list.

1. Bloodborne

To me, this game is the true culmination of the pure artistry FromSoftware has been weaving into their titles. I feel like this is the game Miyazaki is most proud of, and for good reason, and its stands above what I think was the most important title of the last decade - 'Dark Souls'. I hope we get a remake or a remaster of this title for the new gen.

2. Breathe of the Wild

I cannot do this game any justice with words. In a generation where open world titles with 'rpg elements' were releasing every month, this stands atop every other open world game. Masterfully designed and constructed. Its easily my favourite Zelda game, and one of my favourite titles ever.

3. The Last of Us Part II

Whilst the story is certainly controversial and polarizing, the gameplay is fantastic. The love, and time poured into every pore of this game truly shows. The best looking title of the last gen, coupled with fantastic gameplay and level design, superb acting, with a gut wrenching story, places this on my list of favourite titles of the last gen. I cannot wait for the next ND title, and the multiplayer portion of this game.

4. Resident Evil 2

Capcom are the kings of the remake. The original was already a masterpiece, but I feel like the transition to third person with tighter controls, fantastic graphics and sound design, excellent level design, as well as a fantastic acting performances, has raised the overall package to a new level. It doesnt do somethings as well as the original, but to me, its stands above it. A masterpiece, and easily one of my top 3 RE games.

5. Metal Gear Ground Zeroes/Metal Gear Solid 5

Incomplete, incoherent and repetitive and yet I cannot help but love these games. I feel like no third person stealth game can even touch these in terms of gameplay. Its just pure fun. I hope Kojima can go back and make games of this calibre again. I cannot believe Konami is just wasting the beautiful fox engine. This game is still one of the best looking titles of the last gen, and ran at a buttery smooth 6Ofps.

Edit:

Im gonna throw in some of my favourite titles of the last gen that couldve been on the list [not in order]:

- Doom
- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
- Uncharted 4
- Resident Evil 7
- Sekiro
- Shadow of the Colossus remake
- Life is Strange
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Im missing a few but those come of the top.

"The Witcher 3"

Everything else is a distant 2nd. Can't think of any games with the same reach and notoriety. It's this gen's "Skyrim". They'll be porting that shit to toasters in the future.
Yep. Easily the best game of the past gen

For me briefly

Witcher 3 - Incredible in almost every way, one of the things I find coolest is it's homage to Brothers Grimm and old fairy tales, it's really cool to see their interpretation.

MGS5 - Just completely unique and detailed in a ridiculous way, I'm a big MGS fan in general, not my fave in the series but had enough new mechanics and madness to kind of blow my mind.

NieR - Really unique, hard to describe why really, just refreshingly what ever it is.

Stardew Valley - I was addicted to this mother fucker for a good while, it helped me get through the beginning of Lockdown with it's mellow and chill aesthetic and personality, I recommend this to anyone as a meditative relax.

Dark Souls 3 - Dark Souls innit, not my favourite in the series but can't not include it.

COD in a guilty pleasure kind of way, the Battle Royal mode is the first type of that game that really drew me in, incredible.

I did really enjoy RDR 2 as well, but in hindsight there are many things I had problems with too.

This is really hard to choose especially if not splitting them up into categories. In no specific order trying to come up with a top 5 for single-player and multi-player I'm thinking:

Single-Player experience:
- Fire Emblem Three Houses
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Spider-Man
- Metal Gear Solid V

Multi-Player experience:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
- Overwatch
- Apex Legends
- Monster Hunter World
- Titanfall 2

Might have to slide in Animal Crossing, Dragon Age Inquisition and some others in these lists but this is what I've come up with so far.

Titanfall is incredibly underrated. I hope they make a third game. I know it wasn't a super popular game but I think everyone who has played it thought it was great.

Incredibly tough choice, so many great games this generation. I really can't put an order on my top 5, all pretty much instant classics for me and nothing really stands out.

Top 5:
God of War
The Witcher 3
Persona 5 Royal
The Last of Us 2
Breath of the Wild

Didn't include VR games since I don't think you can really compare them to classic 2d games. These were some amazing experiences and made me feel like a child again:

VR:

Astro Bot Rescue Mission
Half-Life: Alyx
Superhot VR

These games weren't quite on the same level as the Top 5 for me, but still deserve a mentiong:

Other great games:
Bloodborne
Divinity OS: 2
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Uncharted 4
Resident Evil 2
Metal Gear Solid 5
Rayman Legends
NieR Automata
Sekiro
Titanfall 2
Cup Head

GTA Online.
It's a fun game with a lot of variety and a lot to unlock over time.

Monster Hunter: World.
Gorgeous game with exciting gameplay and a lot of hours to put to it.

Fallout 76
I enjoy the world and the combat.

Stardew Valley
It's a surprisingly deep, pleasant little world with many little stories in it. Very good for relaxing.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
It has a very in-depth, sense world to explore, one that is surprisingly relevant to today's times.

I have quite a few videogames, but honestly, I've been playing less games than I did when I was younger and just played the same games that had a lot to unlock. Because of this, I've pushed quite a few games to the side (Witcher 3, XCOM2, Elite Dangerous, Forza Horizon 4 and a lot of Game Pass games).

I need to give Witcher 3 another to at some point, though I wish that Witcher 1 would be available for Xbox One so I could play it first.

Titanfall 2 is by far my favorite shooter of this gen. And I mean by very far. Easily the best handling, even if you don’t enjoy the gunplay. In my top 5 if I made a list.

Bloodborne
God of War
Dark Souls 3
The Witcher 3

Some other good ones but for me these stand out above the rest.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Breath of the Wild
Mario Odyssey
The Witcher 3
Stardew Valley

Nioh, Picked this over the 2nd because 2 didn't have the new game wow factor for me even though I still loved it
Division 2, a huge improvement over the first by making the enemies not so spongy and I always enjoy cover shooters
Dark Souls 3, I like the gameplay more than Bloodborne

#1 for me though is Hollow Knight. The best Metrovania since SoTN, and in a few aspects it's even better IMO.

Yeah, it's extremely smooth to play. It is fast but responsive and it just all around feels right. The shooting mechanics too I thought were good but the movement and overall feel of the game is just way up there when it comes to shooters. I can't think of any shooter that I would put above it in terms of movement and control. I loved the titans too. All around it was just an amazing game. It seems like people don't really care too much about mech games so idk if it will ever become really mainstream but damn it is an amazing game.

Monster Hunter World
The Witcher 3
Red Dead Redemption 2
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain
Destiny 2
Stars Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Ghost Of Tsushima

Which is something I don’t get. It had everything.
Great controls. Awesome guns/gunplay. Beautiful graphics. Wonderful music and sound design. Well designed levels, and many many modes. It had everything you could want, but let’s keep playing the same COD game for the hundredth time instead... fuck

God Of War

Ghost of Tsushima

Witcher 3 for 200 hours of content with epic DLC
