From time to time, I just want to watch a movie that makes me smile, has a magical charm, and most likely, nostalgic....but not the sad kind. Mine are in order.
1. Hook
This is my favorite, my FAVORITE feel good movie. The story is unique, the world is colorful, and that MUSIC. From when Tink takes him to Neverland and of course, when he first flies, the music hits me right in the feels.
"That was a great game."
2. Mr. Hollands Opus
Hooper can play the piano?! This was a personal sleeper hit with me. Again, the music excels, but Dreyfuss's performance here, as a high school music teacher starting from the 60s into the 90s is just admirable.
"Play the sunset."
3. E.T.
This is the most touching movie I know. It was the first movie I allegedly went to see as a kid. Parents said we went multiple times. This is considered nostalgia overload for me, but when I dont want to think about harsh times, this can hit the spot.
"Ill. be. right. here."
4. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Am I cheating by putting in a musical? Well fuck it, its awesome. Gene Wilder is a fantastic Wonka and Charlie is...well, hes a better Charlie than the newer one. Aimed directly at being a child all over again, this movie hits on all chords.
"stop. dont. come back."
5. As Good As It Gets
What a story! What a cast! What a dog! Some could say this is a love story, but Melvin fucks it up so much that it doesnt get too sappy until the very end. Until then, its about a transition of being an anti social jerkoff to a misunderstood loving man, with warm, hilarious dialogue riddled everywhere from everyone.
"I think of a man and I take away reason and accountability."
Honorable mentions that I didnt include were movies that are a bit sad, have great endings, or are just a pube hair shy in being wonderful enough to be in my list:
Dead Poets Society
Brainstorm
Good Will Hunting
Stand By Me
American Beauty
