Just wondering, are these gloves good for boxing?

Fairtex - Training Gloves 16 oz

And one more thing: Can Thai gloves be used for boxing? I was thinking about buying Twins but I don't know if they have the support needed for boxing.

Thank you!

thai gloves lack wrist support for boxing, because of the thai clinch they're designed for that. and they just dont conform to the hand as well as boxing gloves do.

if you want to punch, boxing gloves are the way to go. they feel much better and paying 90 bones for a glove that isn't meant for boxing u can get some of the best boxing gloves ever for the same price. just lettin you know. most people on this board do MT and will only reccomend stuff like twins, fairtex, windy, etc., but when it comes to gloves boxing is the best.

i used to work out at a boxing gym and guys that did MT came in to learn how to use their hands and brought their own gloves. I remember one dude with green twins special gloves. eventually you realize the protection isnt as good and comfortable as a boxing glove.

you can get ringside imf techs(which i have, they are the best!) or fighting sports(based off of winning gloves brand) from title and i hear they are excellent. i also heard from a forum member triumph united heatseekers are good also. these gloves are like 60 bucks except for the fighting sports which is like 100, but worth it(winnings are $250!).

your hands are important, so treat them well.

Don't use Muay Thai gloves for boxing, their wrist support and hand/knuckle protection is simply deficient, specially for pure boxing. If you don't want or can't spend 250-300 dollars in Winning or 150 in Grant or Cleto Reyes, try Ringside's, Everlast's, Title's or Rival's high end gear (not their economy gear).

btw new reyes gloves suck, and are more expensive. terrible wrist support. just looking out for the TS. and stay away from neverlast. i saw they are selling their new line for $150 i literally almost sprayed pepsi all over my computer screen.

ringside imf tech and title gels are great(about 60 bucks), and so are rivals(expensive tho but worth it i hear). and u cant go wrong with grants or winning if u wanna shell out the dough

For pad/bg work or for sparring??

I've used my fairtex gloves for boxing before and they held up pretty well I must say

TRADITIONAL CLETO REYES GLOVE OF 12,14, 16 Oz - eBay (item 280395770713 end time Oct-10-09 10:20:24 PDT)

Are these the old reyes or the new ones? I've really fallen in love with old school boxing gloves. I'm saving up for a pair of casanovas or shevlins, wish there were more people with experience with those two gloves.

Back on topic, I've owned several Muay Thai brands, and I have to agree that boxing gloves like my heatseekers provide way better wrist support. Fairtex gloves will work just fine, but at that price I like my Heatseekers much more than my Fairtex Safety gloves. Definitely go with a glove designed for just boxing if that's all you'll be doing.

yes, the one in the picture is the old school one. the back of the fist says "hecho en mexico." great glove, they were so awesome i loved old cletos. new ones say cleto reyes on the fist.

but to let u know man, sellers can deceive you. they might use old photos and sell you new reyes gloves, because im pretty sure reyes has only one shop and they haven't produced the old reyes gloves in a LONG time. unless the guy can GUARANTEE you that these are old reyes and has a photo, not a stock old photo he might rip u off. i know one guy tried that with me at pro boxing in canoga park, thinking i didn't know my shit.

these are the new ones:

Cleto Reyes Official Fight Gloves-www.Ringside.Com

funny how they cost 140 bucks now. old school was 100. i guess the trend now is more money less quality.

I'd advice against thai style gloves for boxing for the same reason the people above me do. You'll find that quite a few people use boxing gloves for muay thai because they prefer the fit and support.

Anyway, you haven't told us if you're looking for a bag glove or a sparring glove. If it is the latter I'd strongly advice you to go for the TU Heatseekers on sale at Title Boxing or TitleMMA:

TRIUMPH UNITED JAPANESE TRAINING GLOVES LACE > Gloves > Title MMA

Even if you want a velcro/hook & loop version you might be better off buying the laced version and a h&l converter.

In all fairness Everlast's high end stuff is good.

Back on topic,

The Fairtex training gloves ARE NOT specifically made for Muay Thai. I called Fairtex and they said that the gloves will work work either boxing OR Muay Thai. The wrist support is supposed to be very good on them, so why shouldn't I use them for boxing?

Do you know that Fairtex gains money if you buy Fairtex gloves?
Obviously, they aren't going to talk badly about their gear...
I know the gloves you posted and trust me, they're deficient in terms of wrist support and hand/knuckle protection in comparison to a good real Western boxing glove.
There is a reason because professional boxers utilize Western boxing gloves.

It goes without saying that both boxing gloves and thai gloves can be used for both sports. They are just optimized for different things. You'd be surprised by the difference though... And I own quite a few gloves including Fairtex and Twins...

Anyway, you seem to just be looking for justification for your choice, so do what you want.

lol sums it all up right there. i tried also. really, its like using a snooker cue for pool and vice versa. TECHNICALLY they can be used, but for diff purposes.

but oh well. who cares

interesting

Anything above their Everlast High Performance 29.99 Dept. Store gloves are vastly superior in quality IMO. I like my Protex 2s (albeit they are vinyl/synth leather) and I really like my Protex 3s.

Ha! I love it. So, is everything as clear as mud to you right now, right? Ask ten different people a question about gloves, and chances are you will get thirteen different answers, and God forbid several of them be lawyers, as you will get a lot more than thirteen answers. One thing is for sure, this is a classic example of why with several exceptions, gloves are highly a matter of personal preference.

The answer is "yes" you can use those gloves for boxing, "if" you want to. Are those gloves the one's best suited for western style boxing? No, they are not. Are long cuff style western boxing gloves with excellent wrist support the one's best suited to muay thai boxing? No, they are not. Are you sure you will only be doing western boxing, or muay thai exclusively?

In the end, a phase commonly used by a Thai bar girl could be the best advice, "up to you." Check out these reviews. I am sure they will help you decide, and be sure to check the "last photo" in the "last review" listed.
