A new report from British lawmakers on how social media is used to spread disinformation finds that Facebook and other big tech companies are failing their users and dodging accountability.

"The guiding principle of the 'move fast and break things' culture often seems to be that it is better to apologise than ask permission," said Damian Collins, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee that drafted the report. "We need a radical shift in the balance of power between the platforms and the people. The age of inadequate self regulation must come to an end."

The 108-page report is often scathing on Facebook's practices and corporate conduct. The committee's inquiry into disinformation began in September 2017, as revelations emerged that Facebook had been used to spread disinformation during the U.S. presidential election and the U.K. Brexit referendum vote, both in 2016. In March 2018, the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke, and showed how users' data could be harvested and misappropriated.

"Companies like Facebook should not be allowed to behave like 'digital gangsters' in the online world, considering themselves to be ahead of and beyond the law," the authors write.

Meanwhile, FB's stock price didn't flinch.

I think, generally speaking, FB and the other tech companies cause more issues than they help solve. I'm not a fan of the UK, or government intervention where speech could be involved, but I do think FB acts in unethical ways and should be punished for that.

Facebook so big that they're such a threat in narrative control? I don't give a shit about facebook, but everyone (gubments) seem to shit their pants about it.

Suspicious. Globalist muslim-loving, 1984-esque gubment demanding "fairness" or some shit, ulterior motives to make things worse? Of course.

Why UK report on ‘digital gangster’ Facebook is a thinly veiled call for censorship

Despite its wide-ranging criticisms, however, it is immediately evident that the overarching goal of the report appears to be to force Facebook to engage in censorship to the benefit of Western governments. It focuses heavily on “malign forces” posting content which is intended to cause “disruption and confusion” online.

Claim to be interested in ensuring a “plurality of voices” online, they are extremely quick to resort to forms of censorship as a solution to the existence of content that does not adhere to certain approved narratives.

UK report mentions nothing about Facebook's immediate transgressions:

Interesting points. I think if the government doesn't make them do it, they will do it themselves anyway. Lean left I mean. Zuck makes the rules and that is what he wants. He's got some SJW blood.

The thought police state has had enough of Facebook more at 11.

As the CEO of the company, he has the right to do that. Also, he has the right to tell the UK to fuck off.

Any type of government intervention in free speech should be frowned upon.

Interesting. I don't like the Facebook/Twitter joint monopoly on online public communications, but I vehemently loathe England online "hate speech" laws.

It seems England is upset at FB for not cracking down on wrong think enough, rather than them not being a platform with free speach and idea sharing

We are still living in a Wild West era of the internet.

Technological advances are coming faster than society can handle and the internet continue to chart new courses regularly while we struggle to keep up.. and the internet has remained relatively lawless because of it.

The law will come eventually. You better download your porn before it's too late.

If only there was a non-profit version we could all join. No ads. No tracking everything. No censorship.

What this report is calling for is fascism. They want to force Facebook to control freedom of speech at their behest. They are making it sound like a good thing but it's not.

Anybody know why I couldnt criticize Trudeau today on facebook?

It said Facebook was down but I was able to use the PM service just fine.

Lol. Everyone saying "well they can do what they want and it's free speech"

They're funded by all the same assholes you cry about. Facebook is not a "private" company.
