Most of the time it seems to be. Of course everyone politicizes the shit out of everything so there's some of that too.

I just think it's weird that people seemingly aren't cynical enough to think that large corporations would pander to minorities for money. They've been doing it since the very second they realized we had any. All the way back to the "black" McDonald's commercials in the 90s that every black person I knew found insulting as fuck.

A lot of these IPs are old as dirt, so damn near everyone is going to be white. Because that was the only demo that mattered back then. Now when they reboot LOTR 20 times? Every single character isn't going to stay white except the cartoonish villains.

They're going to mix it up more to appeal to more demos. This is the same reason the comics have like 15 different versions of Spider-Man. So they can try to sell one to every demo. It's purely a decision based on trying to maximize profits but people get BIG MAD thinking it's some sort of social engineering agenda.

Why is it a guarantee that they cannot stay white? What happens of they stay white. The press whines about it for a month and the shows do fine. LOTR was rebooted like 3 times, not 20. No one would be upset if some dude in Nigeria funded an all black LOTR miniseries minus for the lamest white supremacists.

Comics a tiny irrelevant industry, not suited to tell bigger industries what to do. It's not pure social engineering, it is also a lot of hubris and self indulgence + groupthink + writers and actors being all born rich or wealthy.

Because the country isn't mostly white, hasn't been in many years, and most newer forms of entertainment are not "segregated" the way older IPs were. It's a terrible look. They're either going to change it to pander to minorities to make more money, or they're going to change it so they don't get called racist when they make a show in 2024 where everyone is white except the villains.

Comics was just to point out that demographics have been changing in this country for a very long time. This is a shift that has been happening since the 60s. It's not just movies and tv that don't tell stories where everyone is white except for a few token minorities that are the villains. Pretty much no medium tells stories that way anymore unless there period pieces.

And even then we are now seeing historical fiction that has minorities in roles that they were not in actual fiction. Turns out we're probably not going to say oh if we set anything in the 1800s all the black people better be slaves or it's not accurate.

Does not mean stories cannot be told that way.

Not all black people were slaves even black in those days, some of them even owned and sold slaves.
you can do historically accurate fiction involving pre civil war black people. We had a temporary wussification of the arts / motion picture craftsmanship scene but that can change very quickly.

I don't think the average minority gives too much of a shit how many black people are in LOTR. Some do I'm sure. You gotta understand these big companies do everything by committee.

They're having meetings behind closed doors with spreadsheets and graphs and shit trying to figure out if pandering to this or that minority group will boost sales.

I didn't typed not searched for that video so no deep diving was involved. It took less than 10 mins of my life(watched the vid at 1.5x speed). The YouTuber was able to articulate things that I noticed in western gaming industry. This is not a thread about my life accomplishments and you're out here judging my whole Saturday on a 10 min video.

And why would the commitee say they need that?

Startups maybe really do that, i doubt they really do that at Nike for example. It is different with already established famous brands.
