In work today I was told someone had come in yesterday and returned some golds gym lifting straps. I took a look and found that one of them was ripped completely in two. This surprised me, because they're made from pretty sturdy leather strapping with heavy stitching...

Do you reckon it's possible to tear straps, assuming they're being used correctly? I have a suspicion that some proper mong thought he was supposed to tie them in knot around his wrists and the bar. If they were being used correctly, and they tore anyway, I seem to have missed out on meeting a seriously strong person.

I used to wrap them improperly and ended up ripping these really thin leather ones designed for cycling....lmao....however my other ones survived the beating....nothing like having the weight slip completely out of the hand and have the strap support the weight...coincidently that strap was also couple inches longer afterwards...lmao...

also could depend on the leather/quality. Sometimes some defect could cause it to tear under relatively small load.

chalk ftw...

I never figured out how to wrap a wrap...I just throw it around the bar a couple times, then grip over it.

I supposed it would be easy as hell to rip a leather strap, get a little tear in that bitch and it will rip like a receipt.

i've torn a strap completly apart, one of these, i now use them for wrist support on pushing movements

Nope, but mine are REALLY getting frayed

mine too, ive had one tear completely through on a 700lb rack pull and since then ive been really paranoid so i think it might be time to get a new pair. and for the record, canvas>>>leather and dont overlap the straps.

Yeah a few times (some were crap straps though), I've found that overtightening the straps makes it worse

I ripped one of those everlast straps after locking out a deadlift.

Steve Mac has ripped a strap at least once in competition on a deadlift event, causing him to screw up the event pretty badly.
