Sumo Eternal Sumo thread - Currently May Tournament in Tokyo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan

Onosato does his expected jobs and they really need a real yokozuna now who can win 70 times a year and attend 6 bashos.

What's more exciting to acknowledge is wakatakakage getting back to 2022 wakatakakage. He should be ozeki material.

What's going on with midorifuji? Enho's on a long break. Kawazoe's gone, terutsuyoshi's gone, ishiura's gone. Asakoryu and Midori should establish a new small man's kingdom.

Aonishiki is young and growing. It's a matter of time till he finds a steady parking spot at sanyaku.

I gotta say, I've never watched sumo and always viewed it as a bit silly. But someone posted a highlights here some time ago and wow that instantly made me a fan. There's something incredibly fascinating about watching two absolute behemoths grapple each other in this way, especially when they throw one another, that's fucking crazy looking!!! They do things that look like it shouldn't be possible. Sometimes they don't even look human.

And then reading a little bit here... I don't even understand wtf anything means, people are using Japanese words nonstop and there seems to be a lot of culture and history mixed in with it.

I'm scared though to get into it, I'm already watching way too much sports and definitely shouldn't watch more.

Onosato, more than Hoshoryu ( and i'm sad to say it since i am a Hosh fan) gives off more the vibe that he can get 15 wins. we haven't had a zensho yusho in a while, and it's telling cause we used to have a lot of them during the Asashoryu-Hakuho era.

it's a wonderful sport that tends to grow on you. everything from the brutal training regime, the very old techniques, the absolute horror these guys put their bodies through, how insanely strong they are under the fat. check this out

Being a sumo fan is a great ride. Check out highlights from grand champions/Yokozuna like Asashoryu or Hakuho, or older ones like Chiyonofuji.

Yeah there were some training footage in the highlight video that I watched and I loved it. I love watching really old sports from cultures far away from the "mainstream world" in the training room because more often than not they have some completely new exercises that I have never seen that are super legit. I've gotten a cpuple of exercises from Chinese weightlifters for example. Old gymnastics folks usually have some weird but effective shit too.

Onosato will definitely make Yokozuna this basho.
If I had to guess, he might end up with a 14 - 1
He does still have a losing record against Hoshoryu I think it's 5 - 1 not counting a Fusensho (I believe)
I'd love a zensho yusho but they're so hard to manage

Yeah, i don't see anyone stopping that thrust. Maybe Hosh, but it's still not enough.
There's nobody else. He'll make a powerful Yokozuna.

2 Yokozuna in one year. This will be great.

I think Hoshoryu's biggest problem is that lack of focus. Hopefully another Yokozuna will make him tighten up his weaknesses. His losses are just recklessness.

Waka almost had it, but it was like trying to pull down an apartment building, of course it was going to fall on you first.

The occasional mental lapse is all Hoshoryu is missing. I think he can adjust but I think if he can he has the ability to step his Yokozuna game up.

Onosato looks like a freight train

What did I say nephew? Jesus
Day 13 Onosato vs Kotozakura
Tomorrow will lock the Yusho race if Onosato wins. This is big Yokozuna sumo.
A zensho yusho will be another big thing for Onosato.
Elsewhere, rival Takerufuji just going out of his way to take Ls

Onosato will reign over the divisions for the next 80 bashos or so as a yokozuna.

When did they have a dominant domestic yokozuna last time? Takanohana, I guess who retired in 2003. Mongolian invasion lasted a lot longer than people expected at the turn of century when Uncle-A was on the rise.

Onosato will be the first japanese yokozuna since the brother of Takahanada who was promoted in 1998 (except that paper yokozuna kisenosato who had difficulty in achieving KK. ) But I think he looks more like a cholo than a japanese man.
