Alright, so today I sparred with someone who is much better than me on the ground and tried everything in my might not to get taken down. I was doing fine preventing double legs, but while we were clinched I started to realize I don't know much about clinch defense. All I really could do would be to try to underhook to prevent him from getting them, then try to push his head away then start swinging. While this worked and I didn't get taken down, I still fell that if he was any better of a wrestler, I would of been taken down every time we clinched.

So yeah, I'm just looking for basic ways to escape a clinch for when I want to keep it standing.

Honestly, you just need to practise clinch fighting more. You did the right thing going for underhooks, if you let him get double underhooks you are going down if he is a good wrestler.

Practise pummeling drills ad nauseam, this will give you greater confidence and control in the clinch thus allowing you to escape from it.

mr. bungle, jaxx is right..you did a smart thing. In the clinch the "grappler" is trying to get underhooks on you..your counter would be simply get underhooks on him as he tries. The techniqe as mentioned is called pummeling. Once you have negated his control then push him away, step away whatever to get distance for your strikes.
