English words that don't sound as they should

This is a little off topic and maybe dumb, but why is Stay and Pay spelled the same but Stayed and Paid are spelled differently.

Come to Massachusetts and try pronouncing town names

They have some weird habits in the Northeast. They don't pronounce the r in words that have one but add it to words that don't. Drawer is dra, car is ca, but saw is sawer.

Gunwale.
"Gun Whale?"... No! It's pronounced "genl".
Dafuq is a genl? lol

English is a bastard language with many fathers. Mama English was a ho, fo sho.

Came to say this. There are a lot of examples of nautical terms that are pronounced differently than they're written.

They're just shortened versions used by drunken sailors.

There's certain things I hate about living here and people who try and overdo their accents are one of them. Still not as awful as a Penn accent though
