The MAGA wing runs the party now. Matt Gaetz and MTG are in, Cheneys and Bushes are out. MAGA's antecedents existed in 2005, with the Swift Boating of John Kerry, with the Rush Limbaugh on talk radio, etc, but it's in full bloom now.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden, your run of the mill Democratic politician for the last 10,000 years, Obama's VP, was nominated in 2020 by the Democrats. Bernie Sanders, who would represent a change from the Democrat status quo, couldn't beat him. The status quo remains.

There is a modern conflation of Liberal/Democrat and Republican/Conservative for quite a while. Joe Biden is actually a conservative Democrat and a religious one to boot. On the actual Overton window he'd be center-right, and still espouses Neoliberal ideas, which are conservative ideas. Manchin is a conservative Democrat, so is that mook from AZ who is under FBI investigation.

There just hasnt been a liberal or progressive Republican who can get anywhere since the Southern Switch. They're out there, though. I interacted with one here in NV who ran for Governor. I actually felt he would have made a better candidate than Sisolak.
