A lot of sound logic, believe it or not, went into the decision not to award Edgar a title shot right away. Over time the UFC has learned that a champion who defends often and TOO frequently runs the risk of diminishing the lustre of each subsequent title defense coupled with the risk of overexposure. This is part of the reason that Jones Gustafsson sold poorly as a PPV because Jones was simply defending too much. Another example of this was Hughes defending his championship by facing GSP two short months after he fought Penn. The belt went from Hughes to GSP to Serra and the WW belt became a happy meal toy that changed hands too much.
The full weight of Conor's rise to champion status will be felt more fully by allowing several more months to go by. Consider how often the NBA and NFL teams fight for championship status. Conor has already demonstrated his willingness to fight and defend within the same year ala Mendes and Aldo so close together.
As worthy as Edgar is to fight Conor as soon as possible, another opponents has quietly become equally worthy in my opinion. I like Edgar and believe that defeating Holloway decisively once and for all would silence any and all doubt whatsoever about who Conor's next opponent should be. The UFC and Conor have formed a relationship that many fans and fighters view as unfair and favoritism, and yet the door is open for all fighters to do the things that Conor does and earn advantages that come along with that.
I believe Edgar has two options. Wait to be awarded the FW title shot some time after UFC 200 and remain inactive, or put on an exciting fight for the fans against an up and comer that has laid to waste every fighter he has fought since Conor Mgregor. Yes this puts Frankie at risk for losing the title shot that he has more than earned, but I believe it would be worth it.
