This is what Wineland posted on his personal Facebook page.
I agree, I'm surprised Rogan didn't call this one out.
I think it was kinda early, but Barao is a killer when he has someone hurt.
I don't think that kick really hurt him that bad but he did turtle up after Barao went after him. If you turtle up and the guy keeps coming, after you have been dropped you should know that there is a strong possibility that the fight will be stopped.
It was an OK stoppage.
I agree it was early. Yves Lavigne shouldn't be reffing title fights.
Than you should have got up and not turtle up on the ground.
Honestly, early stoppage haven't really crossed my mind...
Brutal kick, and follow up shots were scarily accurate - right to the side head.
It could have probably gone on a bit longer, but don't think it would change much.
Referee should not stop fight till one of the fighters dies.
So the loser won't complain.
i thought it was early..not that i think he would have lasted more than a few more seconds before it was too late.
LOL! I cant stop laughing.
It wasn't the kick that caused the ref to stop the fight.
It was the fact that he turtled up and couldn't defend the follow up shots on the ground.
The early stoppage was the first thing that crossed my mind, but that kick WAS brutal.
I also agree it *probably* wouldn't have changed much had the fight been gone on longer, but I believe in title fights the refs really should try to give each fighter as much time as possible to recoup until it's absolutely necessary to call the fight for that fighter's safety.
In this case, Wineland got clocked, but he wasn't "out" per se. Barao PROBABLY still would have won, but letting the fight continue to make sure Barao would have won would have been best, in my opinion.
I would think that Rogan has been told by the UFC that he should go easy on calling fights stopped early. Probably looks better, takes away controversy, and every time a fight is stopped late, there is a big risk of someone being seriously hurt and last but not least, media will make UFC look bad for every late stoppage there is.
It was clearly an early stop looking back at replays, but in the moment that mistake by the ref is totally understandable. War Wineland, hope he gets back in there with him soon.
He was out, hate this day after stuff
Didn't stop Rogan from stating repeatedly that the Makdessi fight was a late stoppage.
The stoppage wasn't so early as Wineland's title shot.
He looked out and was taking clean powershots to the face. Can't blame the ref for stepping in there.
Refeering-wise was a little early, watching the fight again. But Wineland was done.
Anyway, you can't complain too much when you're knocked down by a beast kick and then goes full fetal while being beat in the head.
but then sherdog would complain of a late stoppage. can't win
