TLDR: Talk all the shit you want now! Eddie Alvarez proved to everyone that there is more than just Zuffa in the MMA world. I chronicle how many doubters there were after the Cerrone bout and how it was all blown way out of proportion. Eddie Alvarez never left!
There was a time where the UFC wasn't a monopoly.
We had fighters who were clearly world-class that we considered top 5-10 talents i.e. Gilbert Melendez in StrikeForce, Eddie Alvarez in Bellator, Shinya Aoki in DREAM.
So... he eventually gets to the UFC, with a lot of expectation over him.
Just for the sake of this thread I re-watched Cerrone vs Alvarez again, just to confirm my memories of the fight. There is this myth that he got tooled, he was shown to not be elite UFC caliber and had 2 shitty wins in his next 2 bouts. This is a MYTH!
So Eddie comes in and loses to Donald, and all of a sudden he's a hype-job. He can't cut the UFC mustard, he's another Lombard, we've seen it all before, blah, blah, blah! Guess nobody can remember Round 1.
Next thing he fights another elite 155er in Gil, another guy that Zuffa Zombies show ZERO respect for. He's another guy that gets nowhere near the credit he deserves, because it wasn't in the UFC.
Gil breaks his nose in the 1st round and Eddie makes the rookie mistake of blowing it, now he literally is fighting with one eye and the fight is so close to being stopped. Like a WARRIOR he battles back to steal the next 2 rounds and also bloody Gil up with some nasty 3rd round elbows, great fight, great war, Eddie clearly won, even though the SD says different.
He then faces a man in dire need of a win in Pettis, a world class talent. He takes the smartest route possible and the route that I think most people didn't even think he had in his arsenal i.e. the wrestling. He completely smothers Anthony and takes 2 rounds off of him and relatively nullified the striking attack in Round 2 when they were standing.
Now he has a title shot, but SUPPOSEDLY he's BORING NOW!
He goes out there and sits in the pocket with one of the best Lightweight strikers on the planet and rattles his chin, throws a damn flying knee and TKO's him standing up.
BUT HEY... Because he lost a close fight to Donald Cerrone, he was a piece of shit right? Beating 2 of the top 6 or 7 Lightweights ever in Pettis and Melendez means nothing right? Just shows the amount of noobs we have here in this sport and on this forum.
I love the doubters, WAR EDDIE - Would LOVE to see Eddie vs Nate man!
Keep on proving em' wrong Alvarez!
