So I just a minute ago so that EBI was this weekend so I went to look at the line up hoping to see some big names to get excited for and holy shit! I didn't expect such a crazy awesome line up. I don't actually practice BJJ myself, I am more of a relatively casual fan that enjoys seeing the competition and watches a lot of UFC. So for you out there who are hugely into BJJ and know of these guys even better than me. Who would you pick to win??

Garry Tonon is an absolute monster. I am not sure but I am guessing he could beat his buddy Eddie Cummings who I know is a leg lock wizard. I know Galvao, Cyborg, and Lister are all amazing. I just can't wait to see what happens. Would be even more amazing if Kron Gracie was in this event!!!

I also love the martinez brothers but don't really expect Richie to get through a lot of these guys.

Richie Martinez is sooooooo underrated-- it drives me nuts how all the 10th Planet haters never give him his due. I mean, he managed to get through most of these guys BEFORE the event even started! Beast!

He could very well be better than I have seen from him. I definitely don't underestimate his brother though, that guy looked amazing in the matches that I have seen him in.

What do you mean by "get through most of these guys before the event started? He has beaten them before? When??

Damn, i remember that lineup and how excited i was for it. Still going to be an awesome show.

Also IIRC Dean Lister is out, as is Eddie Cummings.

Good grief does anyone have a fully updated card? How disappointing.

I wasn't sure how facetious you were being in your original post. Everybody on your list has dropped out of this tournament, except Yuri, Tonon, and Martinez. Martinez has an exciting style (and look), but has no wins against anybody of note, and many from the BJJ community would suggest that his pseudo-celebrity coach/promoter guides him away from quality opponents under the convenient excuse of 'bullshit rules.'

haha I guess I can see your sarcasm now. I am really disappointed this card fell a part. I expect Gary to run through everyone at this point.

Oh and Eddie Bravo is amazing.

Maybe Eddie Bravo just pulled the wool over my eyes, but I believe that he believes (strongly) that sub only is THE ONLY way to do it. When he talks about "bullshit rules" I think he's buying into what he's selling

Whats wrong with what he says about sub only? Doesn't it make BJJ more exciting to watch? Doesn't it mean more subs?

Personally I don't think I could watch much BJJ if it was points based instead of sub based.

I'm still not certain how sincere your queries are, but EBI is "sub only" only in a relative sense. Under EBI rules there are 10 minute time limits, and an unusual sudden death overtime that often decides its winner based on "fastest escape time." True sub only is no time limit, 'be here all night until there's a submission' (a la old school Gracie challenge matches).

Many do not like EBI rules because they encourage a 'home run derby' conception of BJJ that discourages the importance of dominant position that is otherwise vital to the art (for example, imagine if boxing had a 10-minute 'knockout only' tournament, with an overtime where both guys got free head shots). However, few would argue that Eddie Bravo, despite his narcissism, has created an exciting event that has gotten better with each installment. And fewer would argue that BJJ in IBJJF form is boring and often self-defeating and has ZERO chance of building a viable PPV audience.

The last Polaris was all draws and with the exception of Tonon vs Palhares sucked.

Why? I have been serious this entire thread.

I get your point but I still see it as sub only because there are no points. What you described is hardly even possible for a tournament with an audience.

I mostly only see changes for the better. Why wouldn't guys want the dominant position at EBI? They want the submission to get the money. If EBI had points you could simply hold a dominant position forever which is not only boring but I feel like it defeats the overall point of BJJ which is to get the submission. Of course the boxing example is completely unrealistic as you can't let guys get free headshots due to brain trauma but submissions don't normally harm anyone. I think the point here is that these organizations are giving incentives for people to get the finish. Even the UFC gives multiple incentives for fighters to go for the finish.

Yes, but there was a distinct difference in the way Tonon approached the matches and the way Miyao approached the match (yes yes, one was GI, but Joao was in EBI before, and wasn't very keen on staying offensive and looking for subs). One is a points athlete, wheres the other primarily competes in sub only events. So i would argue that the format succeeds in it's intent to develop more exciting style of fighters.

Please list the top grapplers that Richie Martinez has beaten.

ADCC has the right idea. If you can't tap them in the first 5 min. Points kick in. Fuck the draws.
