I know this is completely subjective, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

Are there any differences between East Coast and West Coast gyms?

I was thinking perhaps the West coast gyms have more guys, better instruction, more black belt, more access to bigger tourneys, etc.

Has anyone trained extensively on both coasts?

The west coast (meaning mainly just california) has a generally higher level of competition because BJJ has just been there longer, and more good black belts seem to move there from Brazil. There are spots on the east coast that are similar to the west coast though.

Well no denying BJJ has been around in Cali longer, how long there have been full fledged BJJ gyms, i dont know. But at this point I think the level of instruction is pretty high on the East Coast as well. I tend to believe that the Brazilians arrived in the warmer areas first and those that came here later got dibs on some of the colder areas, poor bastards...LOL..

Anyway I know in Miami Conan Silvera has had a school for some time.

While on this topic when did the Gracies start opening "official" gyms in Cali?

renzo has been in new york for sometime, and marcelo and shaolin both have schools there. also ricardo almedia has a gym in jersey. so not all the best coaching is on the west cost.

p.s. isn't alliance's main school in georgia?
