Duterte: Journalists in the Philippines Are ‘Not Exempted From Assassination’

Yeah. Cannot believe this is not getting more coverage: the incoming President of one of the world's largest democracies telling journalists 'well if you write the wrong shit, I'm gonna have my death squads take you out.'

I find it hard to believe he is that much of an idiot, maybe some other sources would help?
If
he meant political assassinations, he is completely nuts

If he meant he doesn't care about corrupt journalists getting murdered for publishing gawker style personal info of others and getting stabbed in the way, then I kind of understand the feeling

Comrade Duterte is my main man! Finally someone who will whip the PI back into shape. I look forward to the great future of the Philippines.

All I can say about Duterte is that he's the first president of the country to truly represent the average Filipino. He's pushing away the US and drawing closer to China, and he's given the green light for local police to shoot suspected drug dealers and addicts (and non-partisan scribes), which will basically boil down to shooting anyone they don't like. As a result, expats here are leaving in a mass exodus, or at least planning for it. And foreign investment will surely dwindle with the chaotic state of the country. Happy days ahead in the Philippines!

This is an extreme example of what stupid low-information voters are capable of. It's no different than the American right's nonsensical praise of guys like Trump, Putin, etc. When voters are too stupid to understand policy, they'll vote for macho dickheads.

I was wrong to think this guy would be the Phils version of Trump.

He's more like Hugo Chavez. Hope he doesn't run his country into the ground like Chavez, but I won't hold my breath.

The Filipino people got exposed as a bunch of retards.

Years of mediocre thinking, false sense of supperiority, false patriotism and Nationalism plus bad ubribging have catch up big time as evidence by the massive votes he received.

It has come to a point that I am now ashamed of being part of this country and its peoples.

But we need not to worry the next press of the PI is Pacqiaou....

Looooool.

Thank you for the God.
- Manny Pacqiaou

From the Guardian article:

The Philippines is one of the most dangerous nations in the world for journalists, with 174 murdered since a chaotic and corruption-plagued democracy replaced the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos three decades ago. “Most of those killed, to be frank, have done something. You won’t be killed if you don’t do anything wrong,” Duterte said, adding that many journalists in the Philippines were corrupt.

Duterte also said freedom of expression provisions in the constitution did not necessarily protect a person from violent repercussions for defamation. “That can’t be just freedom of speech. The constitution can no longer help you if you disrespect a person,” he said.

Duterte raised the case of Jun Pala, a journalist and politician who was murdered in Davao in 2003. Gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead Pala, who was a vocal critic of Duterte. His murder has never been solved. “If you are an upright journalist, nothing will happen to you,” said Duterte, who has ruled Davao as mayor for most of the past two decades and is accused of links to vigilante death squads.

“The example here is Pala. I do not want to diminish his memory but he was a rotten son of a bitch. He deserved it.”

And also:

One of the world’s deadliest attacks against journalists took place in the Philippines in 2009, when 32 journalists were among 58 people killed by a warlord clan intent on stopping a rival’s election challenge. More than 100 people are on trial for the massacre, including many members of the Ampatuan family accused of orchestrating it.

Duterte has named Salvador Panelo, the former defence lawyer for the Ampatuans, as his presidential spokesman, a nomination criticised by the victims’ families and journalists’ organisations. Duterte, who will assume office on 30 June, also said he would offer bounties to law enforcement officers who killed drug traffickers.

The Filipino people seems too ignorant to know what freedom of the press and freedom of speech means.

Corrupt Journalists =\= Corrupt politicians.

Its like he is saying he will kill political opponents who critique him.

Colleges in the country is infested with cuckmunist brofessors.

Filipino students needs to learn the concept of democracy and freedom.
And needs to understand geo politics more than having a narrow ethnocentric view of politics.

Yeah, he said he wants to kill all of the "son's of bitches" in the country. Unfortunately for me, most of the locals here group me in that category just for being here. I said it before the election that Duterte is bad for expats and tourism, and it has already come to fruition, before he even takes office. lol.

I really dont know what will happen, I just hope the powers that be do something to stop this madness.

This is what happens when you have a ton of uneducated people in a country.

Oh they allready started their gun grabbing campaign last week they harrassed a business owner who legally owned some assault rifles.

This is why gun registry is bad.

Vacation destinations are dropping like flies these days.

He is cleaning up the streets of his country. I don't see anything wrong with what he is doing. Killing corrupt journalists, drug dealers, thieves, etc. Should they spend money on the criminals by putting them in jail? Ya, that sure seems to work...
