UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier is calling for the world’s leading MMA promotion to introduce a weight class at 165 lbs.

Poirier has fought the majority of his career at the featherweight limit of 145 lbs and the lightweight limit of 155 lbs. As the sport has evolved, fighters are beginning to learn that cutting a bunch of weight doesn’t necessarily lead to better results. In recent days, Poirier has said that he is open to moving up to the welterweight limit of 170lbs to take on Nate Diaz.

Now Poirier is taking it a step further. “The Diamond” says that he wants the UFC to create a weight division between lightweight and welterweight:

“We should have a weight class between 155 and 170. 162 lbs or 165 lbs would be perfect. I’d never cut to 155 ever again.”

The call for a 165 lbs weight class has heightened in recent years as fighters have learned that cutting extreme amounts of weight isn’t necessarily a benefit. However, a number of former lightweights that moved up to welterweight found out they were a bit too small to be a serious contender there, making them a bit of a ‘tweener.’

The perfect example of that is Donald Cerrone, who headlines UFC 246 this weekend against Conor McGregor. Cerrone has bounced back-and-forth between 155 lbs and 170 lbs his entire UFC career, but hasn’t become a champion at either weight class. He might be the perfect fighter to compete at 165 lbs. Nate Diaz is another example of a fighter who could benefit from a 165 lbs weight class.

If Poirier has his way, his next fight will be at 165 lbs. But with UFC president Dana White saying in the past that he is against that weight division, Poirier could be waiting quite a while. In the meantime, look for him to continue chasing a fight with Diaz at 170 lbs.

Fight at LW or WW or find a new job since you want special belts made.

first off, I'm not for a 165 division.
But for the sake of discussion, let's say it's an option. How does that affect the remainder of the lineup?

    • 125
    • 135
    • 145
    • 155
    • 165*
    • 175 or 180?
    • 185 or 190?
    • 205
    • Fatties
170 would be out of the question, so do you continue the 10lb jump? or start the 15lb gap there? Or start the 15lb gap at 190?

Seems to me, cutting 15lbs as opposed to 10lbs is easier and less harmful as the weights go up (and thus, percentage of overall weight goes down).

Who would it benefit? Guys that walk at 180? There's a lot of math that I don't feel like doing right now, but it seems to me that it just shifts the same math up a bracket.

Honestly in terms of talent I think its the upper weightclasses that look in a much worse state, maybe they could switch to something like...

    135lbs
    145lbs
    155lbs
    165lbs
    175lbs
    190lbs
    190lbs+

Basically spilt off the larger LHW's and force them to fight at HW to give you a decent division rather than two weak divisions.

They should def add 165. Colby would probably be champ. Make ww 175.. usman would still probably be champ. But Gastélum, till, and maybe Whittaker could cut down.

No 195.. 205 is already too shallow

The only way Dana would possibly do this division would be to get a belt on Conor.
If Conor wins he'll never defend it and the division's at a standstill before it gets started.
If Conor loses Dana pretends the division never existed and it goes the way of women's 145.

Why doesn't anyone ever mention that this new weight class would be way too close to 170 and 170 would need to move up to 175?

Never fear, Sherbros. I've got your new perfect weight classes right here!

    135
    145
    155
    165
    175
    190
    215
    No limit heavyweight

Lol as if Dustin is a draw.

If this was going to happen it would have been for nate vs Jorge who both asked for it to be for the first 165 belt. Instead Dana made up the bmf strap.

Only person I could see making it happen now is Conor IF he draws big on Saturday night.

no need of a 165 weightclass, but if they made it Khabib would most likely be the champ

The only good reason to make such a div is to get some match-ups between LW's and WW's that otherwise wouldn't happen. Mostly contenders from those divs matching up. There would be no new dominant champ that wouldn't lose in either div.
