I don't think there's any doubt that a gay male fighter would be treated equitably by the UFC, in terms of matchmaking, promotion, etc. Having a fighter come out could generate public interest and would no doubt be looked at as a windfall by the UFC. No one is pushing the big red button, as you say.
The question is whether the various component parts of the UFC - fans, other fighters, trainers and other people connected with the sport - could handle it without an outburst of intolerance. MMA obviously has a fairly macho culture, and it's difficult for me to imagine a fighter coming out as gay without generating a wave of homophobic backlash, bringing negative attention to the sport.
I realize there are several openly gay women fighting in the UFC, but I believe male homosexuality carries a greater stigma in the world of sports, especially in a masculinized sport like MMA.
I'd like to agree with you, that in the 21st century an athlete's sexuality just doesn't matter. But I don't think we're there yet.
Seth Putrazelli (sp?) is and no one seemed to care. So I don't see why it would matter if another fighter was, male or female.
Half of the women's division is gay.
There's a successful gay boxer already that puts an ungodly beating on some of his opponents with his fists and no other appendage.
Besides, history is replete with gay athletes and warriors. Spartans, Greeks, Romans, samurai, the entire nation of Turkey and their oil wrestling...apparently when you spend enough time surrounded by nothing but muscley dudes things just happen.
Which explains prison I guess.
Here's a link to an interview with Seth in which he addresses the "bisexual Seth Petruzelli" rumors, and criticizes the overly serious, macho aesthetic of the UFC: http://www.mmalinker.com/ufc_116_seth_petruzelli_clears_the_gay_rumors_return_2_ufc/
Regardless of what Seth's sexuality actually is (and he says he's heterosexual - I take him at his word), the fact remains that no male UFC fighter has come out as gay. So I can't quite agree with you.
didn't Dakota Cochran do gay porn, or was that another nasty rumor?
