Part of the sensationalism around the firs openly gay male fighter should be dulled by the fact that there have been many openly gay females already.

It could end up being a huge windfall for the UFC. Gays would probably support the guy, and bigots might tune in to watch him get his ass kicked. UFC is all about both polarizing figures and targeting specific (until this point, ethnic and national) demographics

I don't think there's any doubt that a gay male fighter would be treated equitably by the UFC, in terms of matchmaking, promotion, etc. Having a fighter come out could generate public interest and would no doubt be looked at as a windfall by the UFC. No one is pushing the big red button, as you say.

The question is whether the various component parts of the UFC - fans, other fighters, trainers and other people connected with the sport - could handle it without an outburst of intolerance. MMA obviously has a fairly macho culture, and it's difficult for me to imagine a fighter coming out as gay without generating a wave of homophobic backlash, bringing negative attention to the sport.

I realize there are several openly gay women fighting in the UFC, but I believe male homosexuality carries a greater stigma in the world of sports, especially in a masculinized sport like MMA.

I'd like to agree with you, that in the 21st century an athlete's sexuality just doesn't matter. But I don't think we're there yet.

Agreed, remember Kos trying to make a deal about male nurses, and TUF showed that conflict as it obviously tested well with the 18-34 year old male demographic. That was absurd!

Regardless of what Seth's sexuality actually is (and he says he's heterosexual - I take him at his word), the fact remains that no male UFC fighter has come out as gay. So I can't quite agree with you.

I found that there are media stories that not many people (outside of media) really give a shit about - the Jason Collins story, the Michael Sam drafted in the 7th round story so they tend to die out rather quickly. However, the level of outrage by a small vocal conservative group tends to be far more excessive than warranted.

As in, gay story comes out, no one really gives a shit anymore in 2014, but conservative "haters" freak out because OMG, I can't believe they're shoving this down our throats, that liberal gay agenda.
