Hi all

So I've been out of training for around 2 weeks from illness and this past week felt like I was on the up.

Still felt rough but though fuck i would rather a light training session than be sitting on the sofa being lazy... maybe not the best idea in hindsight.

Did an hour of pads coughing all sorts of shit up and then decided to stay for the next hour to do some light sparring. With around 10 minutes left of a relatively sucessful sparring session I got paired with one of hardest hitting guys in the gym.

Long story short we're going back and forth as normal and he's throwing some serious bombs as he's around 80 kilos and i'm 62. Now this isn't anything abnormal as we often bring the best out in each other, but with literally seconds left in the round I slip to my left throwing a lazy lead right and he counters with a solid left hook over the top. Next thing I know i'm on my ass looking at the ceiling thinking what the fuck just happened.

No pain so to speak other than the embarrassment when I got up. My coach told me to sit down and stop sparring and the guy apologised profusely. I didn't get knocked out and was fully aware the whole time but after around 20/30 seconds I felt a little nauseous.

I know people will say go to the doctor especially because it's free over here but what will they do other than tell me not to get punched in the face.

Basically what i'm asking is should I be bothered that I got dropped or just a learn a lesson with my defensive guard against a heavy hitter... pyschologically I don't want it to affect me but can't help but think it will being the first time it's ever happened.

Cliffs: Got dropped in sparring by throwing a lazy punch against a heavy hitter whilst recovering from illness. Meh.

Any advice appreciated or maybe share a similar story about getting dropped.
P.S if I get any interest I will post a video of said sparring partner's latest fight form around 3 weeks ag, where he one punch ko'd someone around 85kg and left him out cold for around 5 minutes. His power is no joke.
thanks

I suffered a quick knockdown on my butt for the first time the other day in practice. Trained to exhaustion preparing for a fight. Sparring round after round with fresh guys rotating in. A guy bigger/stronger than me who was saved for last, so there was a pretty good power/pace discrepancy when the time came. Any way, he caught me with a hook going wild and knocked me down. I'm still really upset about it. Let it motivate you. Always remember to keep your hands up, your chin down, and head moving. I'd rather get knocked down in practice then figure out how it feels in a fight, though, so I'm glad it happened. Good luck!

Who knows...maybe you were just off balance and got clipped. 30+ lbs is a sizable disadvantage. I have a couple friends I spar with occasionally that are around the same size as you (I'm about 170) and I have a hard time throwing anything at them with decent force because I'm nervous about hitting them too hard. Then again, one of the guys has had an amateur MMA fight and has been training standup a lot longer than me so maybe I shouldn't be worried for him as much lol. Coincidentally, he's one of the only guys that has dropped me in sparring (spinning TKD shit to the gut).

The fact that you felt nauseous might indicate you have a mild concussion or it could be exacerbated because you were still a bit ill. Best to go and get that checked out if you didn't already.

My advice - Dont throw lazy right hands...... But chances are, you've learned that lesson the "hard way", which means you're far less likely to forget it. No shame in that, you'll probably be far more aware next time you go to throw that right. Lesson learned, that's a good thing.

It's a shitty feeling, no doubt. I've been there, it freaking broke me. I'm kind of bipolar when it comes to training. I put so much pressure on myself. After a good training session and good sparring I will feel incredibly high, confident, ready to go back and work more. On those 'off days', where my punches don't pop, cardio won't hold up and kicks are stiff, I'll feel incredibly low, almost depressed. But I still have every bit of desire to go back and make up for it next time.

First time I got dropped, however, completely broke my confidence. I felt low, weak, almost like i didn't belong there anymore. The lesson I learned was not to rely so much on how I performed during practice, your ego just gets in your way. You can't always show up 100%. But it's the showing up part that counts.

Good post, noob. :)

I have never been KOed (I don't spar hard anymore) so I can't fully relate. But it's true, though.

Some days you spar like absolute shit. Can't find your distance, hesitant, bad reflexes, everything is basically shit and you get ragdolled. Somehow training partners feel it and own you. Even though you know you won't quit, you think "man, do I suck. Maybe I have chosen the wrong sport".

Then the week after you impose your will on the same patners that kicked your ass.

Ups and downs. Is normal.
