How many of you here have driver's licenses but don't really use them as you have other ways of getting around? My friends and I are seniors in high school and we are debating the benefits of having a driver's license even though most of us are going to colleges that we will live on campus on. Is there a purpose to have a driver's license if you don't own a car, or will frequently use a car?

You should just get a car.

Not really. I live in the city, and I keep hearing about my friends in Long Island talk about how excited they are about getting their licenses, and I don't really feel the same way.

I like being able come and go when I want to. On my own schedule. Not wait on somebody else. Or travel with the public. Having a car is very important to me. It is a lifeline. It is freedom.

It is also cheap to have a license. And it can come in handy. What if you are somewhere, and somebody needs you to drive real quick? Jobs may require it too.

Don't know how it works over there, but having a driving licence opens up a shitload of jobs that aren't an option if you have to rely on public transport.

Just get a driver's license unless your parents don't have a car.

you get a learners permit through a written test, if youre under 18, you have to do classes for it (online or in person). allows you to drive with your parents in the car

then you have to do 6(?) hours with an instructor (private driving schools) before taking a test

the movies show them doing it in school, but i have never heard of that actually happening, at least in my area

There was driver's ed in school. You take a class and you also drive with an instructor. Then you can take the state exam.

Since TS lives in NYC he really doesn't need a drivers license if he intends to stay in NYC. You can get a non drivers license id from the dmv.

Might be different in other states, but you need to pass a road test to get a jr. license after having a permit, and that license automatically becames a regular license at the age of 18. Driver's ed are classes so you can get your regular license at an earlier age.

You don't have to have a car, but you should have a drivers license in case any thing comes up , i.e. emergency, or your driver got drunk and you didnt.

It's an ID and you should have one even if you don't drive. Before I was 21, I had an DL that wasn't even mine(and one that was, of course). Plus, you never know when a friend might be too drunk and you need to drive his, a job might ask you to drive, a girl, or any of 100 things that might just pop up and you'll wish you had one.

WOW! Must be a lot different in other places. Ive lived in 4 states and none of them were anywhere near that.

15 you can get your learners permit (written test, eye test) which enables you to drive with a licensed driver 18 or over. At 16 you take a road test at the DMV.

    Georgia,Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama.

As for drivers education in schools. I think it used to be more common before they all went broke. Our local school had it until about 5 years ago.

Get a lisense just in case, but don't get a car.

Get a good push/commuter bike, will save you shit loads of money and will keep you fit.
