Don't watch the Dog documentary series on Netflix

It's not about dogs. 1st episode is about some girl with Epilepsy and it was ok. The 2nd episode is about some Syrian refugee who leaves his dog in Syria. Dude took a boat to Greece, but then passed through 10 different countries to get to Germany. Why didn't he just stay in Greece?

I thought people in that part of the world hate dogs. Why that Syrian not want to leave a dog in a war torn country? Is he mashugganah?
