Wanted to share this with you all.

Matt Simms of Zingano BJJ (my academy) just wont his 5 MMA fight at Fight To Win this past Saturday.

He won via ankle lock in the first round when his opponent took his back using a body triangle for control. Matt, being very good at JJ, stepped over the down leg of the triangle, roller to that side locking it in place, and arched his hips breaking his opponent's shin.

Props to Matt for the win and wishes of a speedy recovery for his opponent.

PS. Why don't we see this counter more often in MMA?

usually guys that use the body triangle are aware of that danger and keep their weight to the opposite side making it difficult to be rolled to that side, and if they do get rolled to that side they switch the triangling leg.

The submission however is legit, and I learned it back when I first started jiu jitsu both when he has your back and when he triangles your body when you are in his closed guard (which I never understood why they would do it anyway it totally locks their hips in place and they cannot perform armbars/triangles/sweeps with a locked body triangle full guard.)

Also I found this funny.

I hate it when people do that body triangle shit. I know the escapes, but sometimes its hard to go for it. People just use that shit to crush you. I see it as purely a pain-inflicting move, like a headlock. Doesn't open up any submissions, it just hurts.

Then why did he have his back taken? lol

Either way, congrats on the win...sucks about the guys shin....ouch!

eeee, thats not cool. you'd be putting down all the people who've had their backs taken by Marcelo. That includes Renzo, Shaolin, Andre Galvao, etc. The list goes on.

They teach us not to cross our ankles from the back for that reason, but I've never thought about trying to catch someone like that from a body triangle. I'll have to play around with that sometime.

It's perfectly legit. It's the same as framing the face to open up the arm. Half of setting up submissions is getting the opponent to react or distract them.

Knee on belly is the same thing - it inflicts a lot of pain to take their concentration somewhere else. If i want to defend a RNC i can do it all day long if thats the 1 thing i'm focused on. If i'm thinking about the pain from the triangle, loss of breath, and wanting to escape the triangle i'm not focusing as much on defending the choke.

Good info.

HAHAHA

Oh...and to stay on subject...I'll go for that submission anytime I can as well but lately I've been nervous. A guy in the last tournament had me in one and I heard my rib make a popping noise. I kept fighting through the pain and then after the match...It started hurting pretty bad. Been sore for a while and I still kind of feel it when a big guy gets me in side control or passes my guard by stacking me. Now the body triangles make me a little more nervous.

True, the pain would make a beginner lose focus and stop protecting what he should. But I don't do it, I keep protecting the neck. So because I'm there protecting my neck, the guy who has my back thinks "squeeze harder". It's an uncomfortable position that can be painful at times, but if I was body locking someone to open up the neck, and they clearly weren't gonna give the neck up, then it pretty much turns into me just inflicting pain without advancing. That's the part I don't like, inflicting pain on someone without advancing.

So I shouldn't body triangle from the back because some guy didn't know how to switch his triangle to the other side when he is put on his hip? Don't body triangle badly from the back is the real lesson here. Another lesson would be don't do anything badly from anywhere, because that's when people usually take advantage of you. That said, I'm not a huge body triangle fan anyways, because I think it freezes my hips too much on top and reduces my attacking options a bit.

I agree with you, it may help lock down the opponent for a bit, but then I usually let it go so I can get my hips moving for subs, or to swing over to mount.

lol, so the body triangle is now obsolete because someone used it poorly against your teacher?

congrats from across town! Talk about keeping your cool and catching a break.

Here is the counter he's talking about I believe.

YouTube - body triangle escape

I've caught a couple of Purples in this counter. It looks real simple but it depends a lot on how high or low they've got their legs wrapped on you. I've found that the closer their crossed leg is to you hips the better. If they are real high on you it doesn't work.
