Dong Hyun Kim participating in ADCC South Korea

Okay, it's the second toughest bracket in Asia, which is what, the fourth toughest qualifier? Behind Brazil, North America, and Europe? I'm not saying he'll be grappling against chumps, but it's not like he's going against the absolute best in the world either. I follow BJJ and submission grappling fairly actively, at least at the highest levels, but I probably won't have heard of any of his opponents because they haven't done anything at the world stage.

Is Europe much stronger than Japan in terms of level of competition?

He should do pretty well. My only concern is that he's fighting in a heavier weight class than usual. But I'm familiar with his first opponent and Stun Gun should win the match with relative ease.

wow I didn't think he was going to follow through with this

88kg is about 194. He is a big dong.
Only about 8 pounds lighter than machida/hendo at LHW. It will ve fun to see what shape he is in at that weight.
I think he may be overpowered by bigger guys

hmm

I think the BJJ scene in Europe as a whole has developed much more than Japan's scene in the past few years.

You're also asking me to compare a country to an entire continent.

Can't be that great if Overeem was able to win it in 2005 by just guillotining every guy he went up against.

edit- just realized you said "in the past few years."

Carry on.

Right. I was making an assumption that Japan was entering the most qualified from Asia. What country would is considered the powerhouse in Europe? I mean the US for N.America, Brazil for S.America.

In Europe I'd say the UK has the highest level of BJJ out of any single country. And yes, Japan probably has the most high level sub grapplers of any country in Asia, particularly at the light weights. They have actually had a world medalist or two at the black belt level in BJJ, and have produced ADCC medalists a couple of times, which I don't think any other Asian country has done.

in a mma fight Stun Gun would beat Cha with ease.

But Cha is a bjj specialist (was well known in Korea for his pure bjj skills for a long time) so it will be a good one.,

I got to roll with Dong-huynh Kim last week. B-E-A-S-T. Also, he was a very, very nice guy and fun to spar with. I think he will take the comp. in Seoul easily. I'm more interested in seeing him compete in Japan for the next trials if he qualifies on the 26th. Here are some pics of him at my gym last week:

Especially considering that Korea isn't exactly a hot spot for no gi grappling studs. It's not like he's gonna run up against Andre Galvao in this one.
My teammate here in Korea actually won the Asia Trials in Japan (and Korea) and went to England for the last ADCC (he lost against Lovato in over time). He and another teammate of mine just recently qualified for the next one in Brazil (I think it will be in Sao Paulo). They will not have to do the Japan trials.

BJJ is still very young over here, but there is some great talent, and the level and quality of BJJ here is very, very good.

I think he can do very well for himself in this. Kim is going somewhere.
