I'll remember him as the only member of the Yankee team or coaching staff with any balls in the 2001-Present day ERA. Back in the 90s, the Yankees had a big brawl with the Orioles, which was spurred by Armando Benitez intentionally drilling Tino Martinez in the back. Joe Torre, a product of an abusive household and scared about physical confrontation, expressed his embarrassment about the brawl. Afterwards, his docile personality took over the team, resulting in the Red Sox, particularly Pedro, throwing at Yankee hitters without any consequences. Being old school, Don Zimmer was the only member of the entire Yankee dugout in this century to know what is right, and try to give Pedro his proper comeuppance. Of course, being 70, fat, and out of shape, Zimmer never really had a chance to do anything. However, his effort and guts should be applauded.
RIP Don Zimmer.
