I am curios to know, what style of striking did he study in regards to his footwork?

I know he wrestled in high school but his striking does not resemble any other traditional martial arts as far as I can remember. Is he self-taught?

Its a unique fusion of several different styles. I dont think anyone else could make it work like Cruz does. Its taylor made for himself.

At his prime Dominick Cruz had some of the best footwork in mma by far

More of a strategy than a style. Moving objects are harder to hit. By staying constantly mobile he avoids a good deal of damage. And his awkward rhythm disrupts his opponents.

I’ve never really been a fan. It’s too much of a point fighting style for me to really enjoy it. I appreciate the science. I just don’t find it entertaining. I do like his grappling style though.

He explained it on JRE a few years back. Basically self-taught based on the mentality that he was a lot smaller back then (155 was the lowest weightclass) so he has to be evasive and not get hit. Aspects ot it were/are refined and polished by his coach Eric Del Fiero.

Iirc the main points were, being offensive and defensive at the same time and strike on basis of a grappling and wrestling stance (which is why he stands square), so he can mix in the takedowns better. I find Cruz's style pretty entertaining actually, since its somewhat of an experiment that worket out pretty well for him. His injuries took away a lot of his kicks though that we saw earlier on. Though he started kicking a lot more against Kenney in his last fight. Lets see if he has one more titlerun in him now that he's back and healthy.

He's self taught but he's said it before that he studied boxing footwork.
