This is way after the fact, but during Cruz/Dilleshaw I noticed DC almost seeming to purposefully hyperventilate in earlier rounds when his movements didn't suggest that he was gassed (though that is what the announcers were suggesting). In later rounds when he was still kinetic and avoiding punches Dilleshaw was more lead footed, I wondered if his hyperventilating earlier was to oxygenate better as the deep waters progressed.

Did anyone else notice this or am I just fooling myself? Has he spoken about this?

Yes, he's openly spoken that he takes deep breathes to inhale more oxygen and give himself extra energy.

Impressive if true.

Though its more impressive when you go out there gunz blazing in first 3 rounds and still be the more aggressive&energetic fighter in rounds 4 and 5 as well.

Both guys have great gas tank.

I just realized I usually become a fan of fighters with above-average cardio..... Gus,Aldo,MM,Sanchez,Gastelum,Bektic,JDS.....

And then there is Rumble. Lol.

Nah he gassed. 30 seconds into round one. Than he won. Cruz don't need oxygen.

Bingo. I think it's a wrestling thing, he does it and drops kind of, like as if he was wrestling and taking a deep breath before touching the mat or changing levels to reset.
Yep. I think that's what he compared it to. A reset button. As if he uses multiple little gameplans all in one fight.

If you've seen his older fights he's been doing this for years.

he does it all the time. his corner even calls for it sometimes. if you watch some of his older fights and listen to the corner you will hear them shout "reset and breathe" "reset and breathe" and then cruz takes his huge breath

I love the breakdowns on his use of the crouch. Some of the best use of wrestling to set up striking. People HAVE to respect when he crouches and level change themselves or retreat, or he blasts a takedown. Try to counter, and he'll slip under for a takedown or spring backwards out of the crouch and leave you whiffing. By constantly moving and crouching, he is dictating what options you are given. Some movement/dancing around of a fighter can be inconsequential, but Cruz' really serves a purpose to draw out tendencies and keep himself safe.

Totally agree. His td timing is absurdly perfect. Which is crazy because as we've seen, he doesn't even need to perfectly time them all the time to get them.

His body is perfect for that knee tap takedown. It doesn't work very well on people longer than you, but someone with shorter legs can't get that far knee out of his grasp.

He has a very unique MMA wrestling style, and it goes with his striking style.

Are there any fighters who use the same breathing technique? Seems effective with dom
