ok, so i finally found a gym 5 blocks away from my apartment that has pretty much everything I'm looking for. squat cage, power rack, bench, plenty of barbells, weights, etc. Treadmills for cardio and even a big room for stretching and pushups/sit ups/etc. the room even has a heavy bag and wall to wall mirrors so i can work on my Muay Thai outside of class. It's open 24/7 and is super convenient for me since it's so close.

They're asking for 55 a month for no-contract membership. It's cheaper with a contract, but I'd have to fork over a lot of money up front, and I'm not sure how much longer I'll be living here so I don't want to sign a 1 year contract then have to pay an exorbitant cancellation fee in a few months.

does 55 a month seem reasonable to you guys? i've already had a few friends tell me it's not. I'm pretty sure i'm gonna sign up regardless, just wanted to get some opinions here.

I pay $29 with no contract for gym that is 24/7 and has everything you need. Probably depends what city your in though.

Depends on how much money you have.

You live in NYC so it's going to be higher than average to begin with. The way I used to look at it before my wife got a part-time job at the Y and made our decision a no-brainer was how much will I be going per month and what does that equate to for one workout? In other words, If I was realistically going to be able to make it to the gym every other day (15x per month) then at $55/mo that's a little more than $3.50 per visit. Are you willing to spend that much per workout?

Well, I'd be going in 2-3 times a week. I'm lucky enough to have a job at my Muay Thai gym, so not only do I get paid, I also get free membership there. Unfortunately we're a new gym and have yet to install enough equipment for me to get a full strength training workout there. My plan would be to sign up at this gym, then take a week or two off of strength training between 1 month memberships that way I save some money and even get some time to deload and do other exercises. Hopefully my MT gym will get more equipment soon and i'll be able to do it all there, but until then i'll be shelling out 55 a month.

If it's available in your area, do the 2 years for $300 Costco deal for 24 Hr Fitness.

How soon can your gym get a barbell and weights in? Since you work there, maybe you can bring in some homemade squat stands. With those two things, you have all you need (more equipement would be nice, of course). Hell, at 55$ a month, you'd break even pretty soon, even if you bought the barbell and weight plates yourself.

how long exactly did it take you to find this gym 5 BLOCKS AWAY?

haha j/k......as long as it fits your needs you're good to go

haha, touche. I never went in to check it out because on all the outside windows it advertised nothing but the fact that they offer pilates, aerobics, spinning, and kids karate classes. I figured thats all there was to it. I went in for a free trial about a week ago and lo and behold, all the equipment i've been longing for was at my fingertips. plus lots of girls come in there for the aforementioned classes. it's nice :icon_chee

PS, I signed up for a month a few hours ago.

I like training at odd hours, when I am as close to alone in the gym as possible...so I put a premium on an establishment being 24/7. Also, as my MA gym is not 24/7, and I do not have a bag at my house, having a decent heavy bag is also important. If I want to lift at 4 am and then do bag work for a half hour, I can. And this makes me happy.

So in sum, depending on your monetary situation, I might cough up the money....though if you are training too, it might get expensive. I pay about $150 enough for my MA gym...and haven't actually paid for the other gyms I've gone to for about 6 years (I was in college for 5 of those years, and now I work for a college...so I have become accustomed to free, well-accessorized gyms, and thus my opinion might be completely worthless).

that doesn't sound bad at all. my parents pay my gym fee, it's a family package deal where they get 4 gym passes for 120 a month...otherwise it's 60 per person a month. I go to bodyworks and while it's not as bad as planet fitness, it does only have one squat rack and most of the barbells are bent slightly.

If you're in Manhattan, you can take the subway to Woodhaven Blvd in Queens and learn how to olympic lift for $100 a year with the Lost Battalion Hall Weightlifting Team.

55 is nothing. Gold's in Tokyo is like 120!

This. If anyone plans on lifting long term and they have a space available such as the TS's situation, buying your own equipment is well worth it. If I only look at my lifting equipment, I've probably only had to put in $1500 or less over the last 3 years for a sumo rack, lots of plates (180 lbs of bumpers too), horse stall mats, various bars, bench, grippers, wrist roller, etc. I will still be using this equipment as long as I'm lifting, but even for argument's sake, I could probably sell all of it QUICK for $500 on Craigslist. If you divide all of that out, joining a gym wouldn't make sense. IMO, it will always be worth investing in lifting gear if you have the space.

If you can not afford $55 a month for a gym like that, I do not know what to tell you.
