Does the winner of Cub Swanson vs. Jeremy Stephens deserve the next title shot?

Define "deserve"

Cub yes, Stephens no

And Cub actually did improve a lot since last Aldo fight. He has interesting enough striking to make it a fun fight, I don't think he will go in and have a staring contest with Aldo like so many did

Cub sure as fuck does.

On the other hand, Stephens will (theoretically) be facing Aldo on the strength of wins over Cub, and Darren Elkins. So, like, you tell me.

Cub would deserve it

If Stephens wins then Edgar would deserve it once he beats Penn.

Cub, yes. Not Stephens. But if Stephens were to win in grand fashion, yes.

I think that Cub would be more deserving if he were to win, but when you look at the rankings, it would make sense to give Jeremy the title shot if he were to win.

Here are the rankings:

1. Chad Mendes (he is fighting Aldo next)
2. Frankie Edgar (fought Aldo two fights ago, and a win over Cub is better than a win over BJ Penn at this point)
3. Ricardo Lamas (he just lost to Aldo)
4. Cub Swanson
5. Chan Sung Jung (coming off a loss to Aldo)
6. Dustin Poirier (recently lost to Cub)
...

Other than Chad Mendes who is fighting Aldo fight, Jeremy would have the best win streak of any of the other top guys if he were to beat Cub.

Cub wins in any fashion then yet (A win streak of Porier, Oliveria, Siver, and Stephens is more then enough).

If Stephens wins then its close. Elkins was ranked top 8 by almost everyone after the Hioki win and a win over Cub would be a top 5 win on top of that (two top 8 wins is decent for a title shot). If he finishes Cub then it would lean it more from close to very possible

Mendes getting it is a joke.
I wouldn't go that far. You could fairly argue that Lentz, Elkins, and Guida are better wins then Oliveria, Porier, and Siver (him getting a shot cannot be a complete joke if you can argue a similarly impressive resume).

I just don't see it. Oliveira is Cub's fourth best win in his streak, and he would trounce Mendes' best win (Lentz) given another chance. Every one of Cub's fights were entertaining and four of them ended in TKOs. Mendes fight against a painfully overranked Lentz was a boring, gassed, lnp disaster.

I just don't see it.
Mendes best win was probably being the first person to ever finish Guida by strikes (he made Guida look like an amateur in that fight, that's something that almost every top 10 Lightweight fighter guida has faced has failed to do).

You only mention Lentz and that fight when Mendes 4 previous fights before that ended in highlight reel knockouts (two of which against top 8 guys).

It would be nice to see Cub get the shot (although I think he has no chance against Aldo) but Mendes getting it is hardly a robbery

Yes, but Cub should've gotten his shot before Lamas and Mendes imo...

IMO Cub would deserve it with any win, Stephens if he wins very convincingly but not if he just wins a close decision.

Cub for certain. Stephens should be placed in a title eliminator vs Poirier if he wins.

The only reason this may not happen is if Aldo loses to Mendes, in which case a rematch might be in order (Aldo's dominance deserves it IMO).
